On March 7, 1987, he clinched the WBA heavyweight title by outclassing James Smith, and on August 1, 1987, Tyson became the undisputed world heavyweight champion by winning the IBF heavyweight championship by defeating Tony Tucker. He reigned as champion till 1990.
