History of UFC Welterweight
The first champion in the UFC's welterweight division was crowned in 1998 at UFC Brazil when Pat Miletich won the title. Over the years, several fighters have held the belt, including Carlos Newton, Matt Hughes, B.J. Penn, Georges St-Pierre, Matt Serra, Johny Hendricks, and Robbie Lawler.
Georges St-Pierre and Matt Hughes are the only fighters to become two-time UFC Welterweight Champions.
At UFC 201, Tyron Woodley beat Robbie Lawler to claim the title. Woodley successfully defended it against Stephen Thompson (twice), Demian Maia, and Darren Till. However, he lost the belt to Kamaru Usman at UFC 235 by unanimous decision.
Kamaru Usman, nicknamed "The Nigerian Nightmare," defended the title four times during his three-year reign. He defeated Colby Covington, Jorge Masvidal, and others before losing to Leon Edwards at UFC 278.
Leon Edwards won the title from Usman with a fifth-round knockout in their rematch at UFC 278. He defended the belt against Usman again at UFC 286 and then against Colby Covington at UFC 296.
Edwards' title reign ended at UFC 304 on July 27, 2024, when Belal Muhammad defeated him by unanimous decision to become the new champion.
