Dricus du Plessis Controversies

In a 2022 interview, Du Plessis said that he was going to be the "first true African UFC champion" because he was born, raised, and still resides in Africa. This statement drew criticism from some people who felt that Du Plessis was being exclusionary and that he was not acknowledging the contributions of other African fighters who have competed in the UFC, such as Israel Adesanya, Francis Ngannou, and Kamaru Usman.

Israel Adesanya, the former UFC middleweight champion, expressed his anger towards Dricus du Plessis, who claimed to be the first true African UFC champion. Adesanya criticized du Plessis for trying to define his African identity and questioned his right to do so as a product of colonization. Adesanya declared that he would love to fight du Plessis next because of his offensive remarks, but this fight was scrapped as du Plessis withdrew due to an injury. Du Plessis had previously stated that he would bring a UFC belt to Africa, emphasizing his African roots and residency, which he achieved after his win against Sean Strickland at UFC 297.
