Zach Ertz: A Brief Biography
Zach Ertz is a ten-year veteran in the NFL and one of its most decorated and prolific players, while still being underrated by most rankings. Currently, he plays Tight End for the Arizona Cardinals, a position he’s occupied since the 2021 season. Before that, Ertz spent the first 8 years of his career with the team that drafted him and helped him win a Super Bowl, the Philadelphia Eagles.
Before he became a major name in the league, the California-born Zachary Adams Ertz made his way on the collegiate scene with Stanford. Due to his fantastic showing at the collegiate level, which included a Unanimous All-American and First-Team All-Pac-12 selection, was among the higher-rated Tight Ends in the draft. Eventually, he became the 35th pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. Ertz was the second TE selected after Tyler Eifert went to the Cincinnati Bengals.
Due to his immaculate consistency, and aversion to injuries, he slowly gained his spot on the lineup, eventually becoming a core piece of the Super Bowl-winning 2017 squad, the year where he earned his first of 3 straight Pro Bowl selections. But, after an injury-riddled season in 2020, and a mediocre start to the 2021 campaign, Ertz was traded to the Arizona Cardinals where he’s taken on the role of culture-setter and veteran leadership.
In 2022, Ertz and the Cardinals saw his value and signed him to a three-year, $31.65 million contract extension.

Zach Ertz Early Life
Ertz was born on November 10, 1990, to Lisa and Doug Ertz in Orange, California. Growing up, he took up after his father and joined the football team for Monte Vista High School in Danville. From there, he chose to attend Stanford University for his collegiate career where he established his credentials as a receiving threat.
After redshirting his freshman year, he actively took over the tight-end role in 2010. Over his three years, he showed steady improvement, as his receptions saw a continuous increase coinciding with the yards he covered. After starting from just 190 yards in 2010, he reached nearly 900 yards in his final year. The 898-yard mark was the highest for an FBS tight end in 2012, a mark that led to a Unanimous All-American selection along with a finalist spot for the Mackey Award.
Zach Ertz Personal Life
A California native, Ertz is a proud Christian and the son of Doug and Lisa Ertz. He is also in a famous marriage to Julie Ertz (nee. Johnson), who is a defensive midfielder on the US women’s national team. The two first met during their time at Stanford, where Ertz would eventually propose to the soccer superstar. The two married on March 26, 2017, and have a one-year-old son.
Zach Ertz Family Background
Even though his mom is his biggest supporter, Ertz takes after his father. Doug Ertz, before becoming a father in 1990 was a football athlete himself. While he never made it to the pros, his career spanned 3 years at Lehigh University where he played college football from 1981 to 1984.
While he may have gotten the football genetics from his father, it is his stay-at-home mother Lisa who garners attention for her undying support throughout her son’s career. Stanford University even did a piece on the incredible bond the two share and how Lisa is a constant fixture at Zach’s matches.
Zach Ertz Wife
Ertz is happily committed and married to US women’s national soccer team superstar Julie Johnson. The two met during the days at Stanford and both started their careers right around the same. Their debut matches for their mainstay teams came in the same year, 2013. Since then, the two have grown even closer while finding success at a professional level. While Ertz found Super Bowl success in 2017, his wife Julie is already a two-time women’s champion, a part of Team USA’s squad during their triumphs in 2015 and 2019.
Coinciding with Ertz’s Super Bowl victory, Julie was awarded the Soccer Female Player of the Year in 2017, before repeating in 2019. The two are constantly sharing pictures of their joint ventures or just of their general lifestyle together.
In 2017, the two got married after Ertz proposed to her at the Stanford University baseball stadium, the place where they first met. The duo also welcomed their first child, a baby boy, in 2022.
Zach Ertz Draft
Ertz was selected as the 35th pick in the 2nd round of the 2013 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. After a unanimous All-American season, he decided to forego his senior year and instead chose to declare for the 2013 NFL Draft. The decision became final on January 8, 2013. He was one of the best tight-end prospects, the consensus had him coming in as the second-best at the position from college football. At the Scouting Combine, he put up decent numbers, completing every drill while finishing second in bench press and third in the three-cone drill.
But, he wasn’t satisfied. As a result, he took off Stanford’s pro day in a bid to better his numbers. He was successful for most athletics-related time stamps as he bettered his 40, 20, and 10-yard dash while also improving his vertical jump and broad jump numbers. Once the entire pre-draft process was over, the common consensus placed Ertz as a late first or early second-round pick. Unsurprisingly, his selection at 35th overall was seen as a perfect placement. Notably, one of the greatest Tight Ends ever, Travis Kelce, went later on in the same Draft class.
Zach Ertz NFL Journey
Even though his play with the Arizona Cardinals has been solid, all the while missing a significant chunk of the 2022 campaign, Ertz has already solidified his legacy during his tenure with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Since being drafted, he’s been steadily excellent, thriving as a receiving threat at the Tight End position. In just 2 seasons, he was crossing the 800-yard barrier. After a couple of seasons of that, he and the Eagles as a whole, increased their effectiveness multifold in 2017. While his numbers were largely the same, their impact was far more substantial than his 8 Touchdowns, the highest mark of his career. From there on, 3 straight Pro Bowl seasons followed, with him totaling 824, 1163, and 916 yards each year respectively.
However, that middle year, 2018, is what saw him set a remarkable record. Ertz was on the receiving end of 116 throws, a mark that stands, to this day, as the highest for a Tight End in NFL history. After a pedestrian and injury-laden 2020 campaign, Ertz was traded to the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for a 5th-round pick and Tay Gowan. Since then, he’s continued his strong play with Arizona. However, age is quickly catching up to him, as he once again spent the majority of the 2022 campaign on the sidelines despite signing a $31 million contract extension the previous summer.
