Early Life and Career
Brain Ortega started his combat sports journey at age 5 when he started training in Muay Thai and later began training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu by age 13.
Ortega transitioned to MMA in 2010 and made his debut at Gladiator Challenge: Maximum Force against John Sassone. He won his next fight at Gladiator Challenge and signed with Respect in The Cage in mid-2010.
Ortega won 2-bouts at Respect in The Cage to earn a title shot against Carlos Garces for the RTC Featherweight Championship. Brain outworked Garces throughout the fight and earned a unanimous decision victory to win the title. He successfully defended the title against Thomas Guimond via first-round submission before leaving the promotion to sign with the RFA (Resurrection Fighting Alliance).
He won his RFA debut at RFA 9 against Jordan Rinaldi via third-round triangle choke submission to earn a title shot at the RFA Featherweight Championship against Keoni Koch. Ortega squeezed out a split decision victory over Koch in the 5-round encounter to win the RFA Featherweight Championship. He left the promotion after the title win to join the UFC in 2014.
Brian Ortega UFC
Brain Ortega made his UFC debut against Mike De La Torre at UFC on Fox 12: Lawler vs. Brown. Ortega out grappled Torre to score a first-round submission victory via triangle choke that later got overturned to a No Contest due to Ortega testing positive for an anabolic-androgenic steroid called Drostanolone that resulted in Ortega receiving a nine-month suspension.
Brian made his return at UFC Fight Night: Boetsch vs. Henderson against Thiago Tavares. Both fighters put on a back-and-forth encounter that ended with Ortega TKO'ing Tavares in the last minute of the fight and both fighters receiving a Performance of the Night bonus.
Ortega continued on his winning streak momentum as he defeated the likes of Clay Guida via KO, Renato Moicano via submission, and Cub Swanson via submission to receive his first Performance of the Night bonus.
He next KO'ed former UFC Featherweight champion Frankie Edgar to earn a title shot for the UFC Featherweight Championship against Max Holloway at UFC 226, later shifted to UFC 231 because of Holloway suffering concussion-like symptoms.
Max schooled Ortega and dominated him throughout the fight to put a blemish on Ortega's perfect record. The fight got stopped at the end of the fourth round via doctor's stoppage due to the damage inflicted on Ortega's body.
Brian bounced back from the loss and returned to the sport after 20-months to fight "The Korean Zombie" Chan Sung Jung at UFC Fight Night: Ortega vs. The Korean Zombie. Ortega outworked Jung and secured a unanimous decision victory.
Ortega next became a coach opposite Alexander Volkanovski for The Ultimate Fighter 29 to build to the title fight between the two fighters.
Brian Ortega fought Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 266 for the UFC Featherweight Championship. The fighters put on a fight of the year contender bout that ended on the Judges' scorecard. The judges handed Ortega the loss via unanimous decision, though he did earn the Fight of the Night award for the bout.
Brian Ortega vs Alexander Volkanovski
Brian Ortega fought Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 266 for the UFC Featherweight Championship. Volkanovski controlled the fight in the first and second rounds by landing nearly double the number of strikes on Ortega.
Ortega showcased his prowess in the third round as he knocked down Volkanovski with a straight punch and locked in a tight Guillotine choke that could have led to Volkanovski passing out. However, Alexander escaped from the guillotine but got trapped in a triangle chokehold. The champion showcased his tenacity and powered through the hold to come back on the feet.
Brian showcased signs of gassing out in the championship rounds as his output decreased and forced to go to defense, especially in the fourth round. The last round saw both the fighters pushing out the last of their gas tank and ended with blood dripping out of Ortega's face as the bout went to the judges' scorecard.
Ortega lost the fight via unanimous decision.
