Chikara (2002-2007)

During his time in Chikara, Hero met Claudio Castagnoli and formed Kings of Wrestling. They became the first Chikara Campeones de Parejas and won several tag team tournaments and championships over various independent promotions. Hero also had a small feud with Castagnoli, which he won.

ROH (2005-2012)

In 2005, Hero began working for ROH, where he wrestled with the likes of Bryan Danielson, Samoa Joe, Austin Aries, and Roderick Strong. In 207, Hero won the Survival of the Fittest tournament but failed to win the ROH World Championship. In 2009, he reunited with Castagnoli and challenged The Briscoes for the ROH World Tag Team Championship.

In 2010, they won the ROH World Tag Team Championship for the second time. After 363 days, the duo lost the titles and Castagnoli signed with WWE. Hero made a handful of appearances for ROH while working with WWE.
