Mark Henry: A Brief Biography

Mark Jerrold Henry is an American powerlifter, Olympic weightlifter, strongman, and retired professional wrestler signed with AEW. He is best known for his career as a weightlifter and wrestler with WWE. He is a former world champion and WWE Hall of Famer.

Professional Wrestling Career

WWF/WWE

Early Years, Nation of Domination and Sexual Chocolate (1996-2000)

At the age of 24, WWE signed Henry for a ten-year contract with the company. In 1996, he made his debut against Jerry Lawler and won. In his early years, he served as a cornerman and won several matches.

In 1998, he joined the Nation of Domination. He was involved in the feud between the Nation and DX. After the group split, he defeated The Rock at Judgement Day. In 1999, he changed his character and went by Sexual Chocolate.

At SummerSlam, he turned on D'Lo Brown and allowed Jeff Jarrett to win. The next night, he was awarded the WWF European Championship from Jarrett. He feuded with D'Lo Brown and Viscera before going to OVW and strong competitions.

Various Feuds and The Undertaker (2003-2007)

In 2003, he was a part of RAW, where he faced Booker T frequently and won. Henry faced Goldberg and Shawn Michaels on different occasions and lost. In 2004, Henry took some time off because of an injury and went back to OVW.

In 2006, he began feuding with Batista for the world championship. However, Batista got injured and vacated the title. At Royal Rumble, he faced Kurt Angle and lost. At WrestleMania XXII, he lost to The Undertaker in a casket match.

Henry went on a path of destruction after WrestleMania and defeated several superstars. Batista made his return after the injury and confronted Henry. However, Henry got injured and was out of action for a year.

In 2007, he made his returned and attacked The Undertaker. This allowed Edge to cash in his money in the bank contract and win the World Heavyweight Championship. After defeating several jobbers, Henry faced The Undertaker at Unforgiven and lost.

ECW Champion and MVP (2007-2011)

After a short hiatus, they drafted Henry to ECW. At Night of Champions, Henry won the ECW World Championship by defeating Kane and The Big Show. After winning the title, Tony Atlas became his manager. Henry lost the ECW World Championship to Matt Hardy after 70 days.

At WrestleMania XXV, he entered the Money in the Bank ladder match but lost to CM Punk. After being drafted to RAW, Henry spent the next two years teaming up with MVP frequently. They faced Jeri-Show at Breaking Point for the Unified Tag Team Championships and lost.

Hall of Pain (2011-2013)

In 2011, Henry was drafted to SmackDown and turned heel. He began attacking superstars after the match, and kayfabe injured the Big Show. At SummerSlam, Mark Henry defeated Sheamus by a count-out. At Night of Champions, Mark Henry defeated Randy Orton and won his first WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

Henry continued his rivalry with The Big Show and won at Vengeance and Survivor Series. The rivalry concluded at TLC in a chairs match when Henry lost the title to The Big Show. However, Daniel Bryan cashed in and won the title.

After losing the title, Henry was suspended as a part of a storyline. Henry returned to RAW and lost to Sheamus. Henry faced CM Punk for the WWE Championship and lost. In May, Henry went under a career-threatening surgery and took some time off.

Final and Sporadic Appearances (2013-2021)

In 2013, Henry returned and attacked several superstars. Henry began his feud with Ryback, heading into WrestleMania. At WrestleMania XXIX, Henry defeated Ryback. After losing to Sheamus at Extreme Rules, Henry announced his retirement.

On RAW, Henry came out to give his retirement speech. John Cena came out to acknowledge Henry, but Henry attacked Cena and challenged him to a match. At Money in the Bank, John Cena defeated Mark Henry for the WWE Championship.

Between 2013-2017, Henry wrestled sporadically and took time off. Henry faced several old and new superstars in the process. He also took part in Royal Rumble and Andre the Giant Battle Royals at WrestleMania. In 2018, The Big Show inducted Mark Henry into the WWE Hall of Fame.

In May, Mark Henry signed with AEW as a Talent Head and Commentator for AEW Rampage.
