Padraig Harrington's Early Life and Background

Hailing from Dublin, Ireland, Padraig Harrington was the youngest of five sons. His father, a skilled athlete, played Gaelic football, boxed, and even held a low golf handicap. Growing up in a golfing neighborhood alongside future champions, Harrington was surrounded by the sport. He honed his skills at a nearby golf club, fueled by the encouragement of his family.

Padraig Harrington's Amateur Golf Career

Harrington represented Great Britain and Ireland in the Walker Cup, a biennial competition for amateur golfers between Great Britain & Ireland and the United States, three times (1991, 1993, and 1995). Notably, he was part of the winning team in 1995 at Royal Porthcawl.

Harrington never lost a singles match in six years playing for his country. He consistently defeated the best players from other countries, which gave him the confidence to pursue a professional career.

Unlike many golfers who turn pro young, Harrington balanced his amateur career with his studies, obtaining an accounting degree before turning professional in 1995 at 24.

Padraig Harrington's Professional Career

Harrington turned professional in 1995; he secured a European Tour card and won his first professional event (Spanish Open) within 10 events. He also partnered with Paul McGinley to win the World Cup for Ireland in 1997.

Harrington became a regular on Ryder Cup teams, featuring in six consecutive teams (1999-2010) with four European victories (2002, 2004, 2006, 2010). He won his first two PGA Tour titles in 2005 and topped the European Tour's Order of Merit (leading money winner) in 2006.

He won the Open Championship at Carnoustie in 2007 (first home winner of the Irish Open in 25 years). Harrington achieved a career-high world ranking of third in 2008 and won two Majors: The Open Championship (back-to-back victories) and the PGA Championship in 2008.

He spent over 300 weeks ranked within the top 10 of the world and captained the European Ryder Cup team in 2021. The pro golfer also finished second at The Tradition and won the U.S. Senior Open in 2022 and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame (Class of 2024) in March 2023.

Flood and Harrington have been a successful team since 2004, with Flood being on the bag for all three of Harrington's major championship victories: The Open Championship in 2007 and 2008 and the PGA Championship in 2008. They've also caddied together in Ryder Cups, Masters tournaments, and other prestigious events worldwide.

Their long partnership has been built on a foundation of friendship that goes back to their junior golfing days. They met at Stackstown Golf Club, south of Dublin, and Flood was a talented golfer with a single-figure handicap who played for University College Dublin.

Flood left his job as an assistant bank manager to become Harrington's caddie in 2004, and their success together has solidified their decision. In an interview with The Caddie Network, Flood said his best memory as a caddie was "walking down the 72nd hole of the 2008 Open knowing we had it won."
