Taylor Townsend was born on April 16, 1996 in Chicago, Illinois. Her parents are Gary Townsend and Sheila Townsend, both Americans. They are both high school administrative workers, and her mother has also worked as a banker.
Townsend picked up the racket at the tender age of six, and was one of the first junior players who joined the XS Tennis Program by Kamau Murray (famous for being the coach of Sloane Stephens when she won the US Open in 2017).
