Thomas Muller Biography
Thomas Müller is a German professional footballer, who currently represents Bayern Munich in Bundesliga. Thomas was born on 13th September 1989 in Weilheim in Oberbayern, West Germany.
Standing 6ft 1in, the self-proclaimed “Raumdeuter” (the German word for space investigator) is known for his positioning, teamwork and stamina, work-rate, and has shown consistency over the years.
The right-footed player currently is one of the most versatile players in the German squad, playing attacking midfielder, second striker, center forward and on both the wings.
Background
Thomas played for TSV Pahl at the age of 10 as a youth before joining the local Bundesliga side Bayern Munich in 2000. In one of the seasons, Pahl had scored 165 goals, 120 of which came through Müller.
He came through the youth system and finished as the runner-up in the Under 19 Bundesliga in 2007. He scored in his first match as a part of the reserve team that played against SpVgg Unterhaching in a Regionalliga match in March 2008.
Debut
Muller played in the pre-season friendlies making his debut in the Bayern Munich’s first-team under Jürgen Klinsmann. He made his debut on 15th August 2008, when he came on as a substitute for Miroslav Klose against Hamburger SV for the last 10 minutes.
On 3rd March 2010, Germany’s head coach Joachim Löw called him for an international friendly. He made his debut against Argentina as a 66th-minute substitute for Toni Kroos as Germany lost 1–0.
He went on to make three appearances that season. Thomas made his Champions League debut on 10 March 2009 when he was substituted on in the 72nd minute against Sporting CP for Bastian Schweinsteiger.
Rise to glory
In February 2009, Müller was awarded a contract for the senior team of Bayern Munich alongside his reserve teammate Holger Badstuber for a period of two years. He progressed under Louis van Gaal as he picked him for every single Bundesliga fixture in the 2009-10 Bundesliga, as well as the UEFA Champions League final, which Bayern lost to Inter Milan.
In the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Thomas came on as a half-time substitute in the final warm-up match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, in which Germany emerged victorious by the margin of 3-1.
He started in the first game of Germany's World Cup campaign and scored the third goal in the 4–0 win over Australia. He scored again in the Round of 16 fixture against England and was again in the scoresheet when Germany won 4-0 against Argentina.
He, however, was suspended from playing the semi-finals against Spain who went on to win the tournament. He scored in the third-place tie against Uruguay and won the Golden Boot award. He also won the Best Young Player Award at the tournament.
Müller was an integral part of the 2012–13 season as Bayern won a historic treble by scoring 23 goals.
On 16 June 2014, in Germany's opening match of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Müller scored a hat-trick in a 4–0 win against Portugal which earned him a Man of the Match award. Müller won the Silver Boot by scoring five goals in the tournament and was also named in the World Cup All Star XI. He became only the third player to score five goals in two successive World Cups.
Club career
In 1993, Muller was a part of the youth system in TSV Pähl at the age of 10. He spent 7 seasons there before moving to Bayern Munich in 2000. He came through the youth ranks and made his competitive debut against Jürgen Klinsmann.
He was utilized to his full potential by Louis Van Gaal when he was involved in all the domestic league matches in the 2009-10 season. Muller's first Bundesliga goal of the season came against SpVgg Greuther Furth in August 2012.
Records
On 21 April 2015, he scored against Porto to become the most scoring German player in the UEFA Champions League.
He won the DFB-Pokal Top Goalscorer award in three different seasons.
Muller has won six Bundesliga titles, four DFB-Pokal, four DFL-Supercup, one UEFA Champions League, one UEFA Super Cup and a Club World Cup with Bayern Munich.
He was a part of FIFA World Cup All-Star Team, FIFA World Cup Dream Team and the FIFPro World XI 3rd team in the 2014 season.
