William Regal: A Brief Biography

Darren Kenneth Matthews is an English retired professional wrestler best known for his work as William Regal. He is signed with AEW and worked for various promotions, such as WWE and WCW.

Professional Wrestling Career


Early Years and WCW (1983-1999)


Matthews began wrestling at the age of 15 for the English independent circuit. In the early 1990s, Matthews began working outside England and went by Steve Regal. In 1993, Regal made his WCW debut. At Fall Brawl, Regal won the WCW Television Championship. Regal enjoyed a lengthy championship reign and lost the title next September.


Later, Regal formed a tag team with Bobby Eaton as The Blue Bloods. During his time in the tag team division, Regal won the WCW Television Championship on three more occasions. Regal left the company in 1998 only to return a year later. In his last days, he lost a career vs title match and went to WWF.

WWF/E (2000-2021)


In 2000, Regal returned and played a part in the Invasion storyline. After his return, he was primarily working in the mid-card division and won several European and Intercontinental Championships. At WrestleMania X8, Regal lost the title to RVD. Later, Regal won the European and World Tag Championship and joined The Un-Americans before suffering a concussion and a heart parasite, which kept Regal out for the rest of the year.

After his return in 2004, Regal spent his time teaming up with Eugene and Tajiri, where he won the World Tag Team Championship on two occasions. Later, Regal was moved to SmackDown, where he joined The King's Court with Booker T and Finlay. Regal left the stable after losing his match against Chris Benoit. For a short period, Regal reformed The Blue Bloods and worked on SmackDown.


In 2007, he moved to RAW and became the General Manager. Next year, he won the King of the Ring tournament and won the Intercontinental Championship for the second time. Later, he was moved to ECW, where he created a stable called The Ruthless Roundtable and feuded with Christian for the ECW Championship. After 2010, Regal became a semi-retired wrestler and worked on NXT. In 2014, he became the NXT general manager until they released him in 2021.

AEW (2022-Present)


At Revolution, William Regal came out and consulted Jon Moxley and Daniel Bryan. After the show, William Regal signed with AEW. Regal was last seen on Dynamite with Moxley and Bryan.
