Yadier Benjamin Molina was a professional Major League Baseball player. He is originally from Puerto Rico and was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2000 MLB draft. The Cardinals signed him for $325,000. Molina is also known by his nickname ‘Yadi’, especially in Puerto Rico.

Molina played the position of a catcher in the MLB. He debuted his MLB career in 2004 and retired in 2022. He was known as one of the best catchers in the MLB. Molina’s acclaims are many. He is a ten-time All-Star and two-time World Series Champion. He has also won nine Gold Glove awards. The catcher also participated in four World Baseball Classic tournaments and played for the Peurto Rican team, he won silver in two of the tournaments.

Yadier Molina’s Early Life

Yadier Molina was born on 13 July 1982 in Bayamon, Peurto Rico. His parents, Benjamin and Gladys Matta, are of Puerto Rican descent. He is the youngest child of the family and he has three older brothers.

He attended the Maestro Ladislao Martínez High School. He could have been drafted twice before. First, Molina was almost selected by Minnesota Twins’ agent Edwin Rodriguez when he was still in high school. However, Rodriguez decided to not sign Yadier as even though he was very talented, his weak at batting. The second time, when he performed for the Cincinnati Reds at Riverfront Stadium. However, again he wasn’t selected even though he caught the eyes of the executives of the team.

Before being eligible for the MLB draft, Molina played with the Hattilo Tigers, a team based in Puerto Rico. He was selected for the team on his first tryout, the other members of the team were much older than him. He was finally drafted into the MLB by the St. Louis Cardinal in the fourth round of the 2000 MLB draft. He was signed for $325,000 by the Cardinals.

Molina’s father, Benjamin Molina Sr. shared his passion for baseball with him. His father was also an amateur player and worked as a tools technician to support their family. Benjamin wanted either or all of his three sons to take up baseball as a profession. Unfortunately, he passed away because of a heart attack in October 2008.

Bengie was a World Champion in 2002 and he was also a recipient of the Gold Glove award twice. Jose Molina debuted his MLB career with the Chicago Cubs in 1999 and retired with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 2014. He was the World Series Champion twice, once in 2002 and then in 2009.
