Besides this, they have also added several other titles in their collection over the years. The team’s name pays a tribute to the American Royal, which is a show about livestock, horses, rodeo and barbeque competition. It also pays tribute to the Kansas City Monarchs baseball team of the Negro League.
Although the team’s performance has dwindled in recent times, they have some talented players on the roster and maintain a loyal fan base. They are solely dedicated towards getting their third World Series Championship.
Kansas City Royals History
Kansas, Missouri, United States initially had a baseball team called Kansas Athletics. However, after this team moved to Oakland and became the Oakland Athletics in 1967, Kansas was left with no baseball team. All that changed when the Kansas City Royals were formed in 1969 and started playing in the MLB. The team had its first winning season 1971.
The team kept up its performance throughout the 1980s which resulted in them becoming the toppers of the West Division in the American League (AL) for six times in the last ten years. This resulted in the team appearing in the World Series for the 1985 season, also known as the I-70 series. The Kansas City Royals and the St. Louis Cardinals had a fierce competition in this and it ultimately ended in the Kansas City Royals becoming World Series Champions for the 1st time. Following this, their quality of performance declined. However, they returned and remained in contender status throughout the 1990s.
During the 2000s, the quality of the team’s performance again declined till 2002. The team bounced back and eventually won the 2003 season in the MLB. After this, disaster struck the team from the 2004 season and it remained with them till the 2012 season. The team spent the 2012 season improving and rebuilding themselves. This saw them become contenders again in the 2013 and 2014 seasons. All these preparations by the team finally paid off when they became the World Series Champions for the 2nd time in 2015.
Unfortunately, following their 2nd World Series Title win in 2015, the team has become mediocre in the MLB. They are no longer their former selves and have continued losing their games. The team ended up with 100 losses in both the 2018 and the 2019 seasons.

The rivalry between these two teams is because of geographic reasons. This rivalry is also called the “I-70” because the interstate 70 links the cities of Kansas and St. Louis. Their rivalry started when the Royals defeated the Cardinals and became World Series Champions in 1985. However, the Cardinals have bounced back since then and have always been ahead of the Royals in every season.
Rivalry of the Royals and the Yankees
