They are also notable for becoming the World Series Champions in 2002. Besides this, they have also won the AL West Division titles nine times. This further added to the popularity of the team for the fans.
In the present times, the team has had some of the best players in baseball on their roster like that of Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani. This has allowed the team to present a serious challenge to their opponents.
Los Angeles Angels History
The Los Angeles Angels team was founded in 1961 by Gene Autry, in Los Angeles. The team started playing in the 1961 season of the MLB. The players on the roster of the team during that time quickly became fan favorites. Unfortunately, they were unable to gain the success that they were seeking. In 1965, the team eventually moved to Anaheim and renamed itself as the California Angels.
While in Anaheim, the team became contenders for the AL Pennant but was unable to get it. During the 1970s, the performance of the team became mediocre despite the efforts of Nolan Ryan firing four of his seven no-hitters at the time.
The team appeared in the postseason for the first time during these years and also won their first AL West title in 1979. After this, during the 1980s, the team began to struggle again.
The fortune for the team turned brighter when they would become contenders for the World Series in the 2000s. All this, ultimately culminated in the team becoming the World Series Champions for the first time in 2002. Following this, the team changed its name to Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. This name was not well-liked by fans and Anaheim County sued the team. Nevertheless, the court ruling was in favor of the team and they kept the name. In 2005, the team won the AL West Division title with five games still remaining to play. This was followed by the team getting themselves in the 2nd position in the AL West in the 2006 season. The team was able to maintain their playoff contender status till the 2009 season.
During the 2009 season, the team had to deal with a lot of injuries and struggled as a result. Their performance was also uneven in the 2010 season. The team’s fortunes again began to improve since the 2011 season with them winning the AL West Division Championship again in 2014. After this, they finished in the third place during the 2015 season. The team continued to provide a serious challenge to their opponents throughout the remaining seasons especially with the combination of Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani. They are presently in the race again to become the World Series Champions for the second time.
Los Angeles Angels Owner
The Los Angeles Angels are currently owned by Arturo “Arte” Moreno and his wife Carole Moreno. They gained the ownership of the team from The Walt Disney Company for $180 million in 2003.
Born in Tucson, Arizona, United States, Arte Moreno is the first Mexican-American to have the ownership of a sports team in America. He co-owns the team with his wife Carole Moreno, who is a philanthropist.
Under the ownership of the Morenos, the team won six AL West Division titles.
Besides owning the baseball team, Arte Moreno also owned Radio 830 KMXE, which was once the largest Spanish language radio channel in America. He used it to broadcast the games of the Los Angeles Angels in Spanish. He along with his wife have also donated to the health sectors as part of their philanthropic work. They also provide support to organizations which help food banks and homeless shelters through their Moreno Family Foundation.
