This has helped them to achieve a large amount of fan base and media attention. Presently, they are the fourth highest-valued sports team in the world according to Forbes.
In the present years, the New York Yankees have managed to keep up their dominating presence in the MLB.
New York Yankees History
The New York Yankees’ history goes back well over a century. They were first formed as the New York Highlanders in 1903. This team came to be known as the New York Yankees in 1913. They started competing for the championships in the AL after they got Babe Ruth on their team. The team won its first AL title in 1921 and then went on to win the first World Series Title in 1923. They performed well which led to the team’s owner Geroge Steinbrenner signing up more talented players for the team.
However, between the 1960s and 1970s, the team declined in their performance. They had poor performance consistently throughout this time. Between 1985 and 1995, the New York Yankees started to struggle in their performance. Nevertheless, they managed to return to the postseasons of the MLB games. Then they went on a Championship winning streak from 1996-2001. During 2009, the team recorded their 27th World Series title win. Furthermore, they also moved to a new stadium to play their games.
Then the year 2017, saw the arrival of the “Baby Bombers” which included players like Luis Severino, Aaron Judge, Gary Sanchez, and Greg Bird. This greatly powered up the New York Yankees team and helped them maintain a dominant position in the MLB.
New York Yankees Owner
The New York Yankees is presently owned by Harold Zieg Steinbrenner. He is a businessman from America. He is notable for being the Chairman and Managing General Partner of Yankee Global Enterprises.
Born on December 3, 1969, in Culver, Indiana, United States, Hal Steinbrenner, obtained ownership of the New York Yankees from his father George Steinbrenner after his death in 2010. George Steinbrenner originally purchased the team in 1973. Since then, the Steinbrenner family has controlled the team.
As per Hal Steinbrenner, his team wants ownership of the New York Yankees for an unlimited period of time. He and his family have already started discussing the roles of the younger generations of the family members regarding the team and its operations in the future. More recently, Katherine Steinbrenner, the daughter of Hal Steinbrenner has expressed her interest in taking control over the ownership of the Yankees after her father. The Steinbrenner family looks after all the requirements regarding the Yankees and ensures that the team stays up to form.
New York Yankees Jersey and Logo
The New York Yankees have their own home and road jerseys just like all other MLB teams. Their present home jersey is white and navy blue. It consists of white-colored jerseys and pants with navy blue pinstripes running through the jersey and the pants. There is a navy blue Nike sign on the upper left side of the jersey and the logo of the team is navy blue “NY” interlocked on the upper right side of the jersey. The player's number is on the back of the jersey. The caps and helmets are also navy blue in color with the “NY” interlocked in white in front of the cap/helmet.
The road jersey of the New York Yankees is gray colored in the jersey and pants. The word “New York '' crosses the chest of the jersey in navy blue and with a white outline around it. Furthermore, there are stripes colored in navy white around the sleeves of the jersey. The cap and helmet for the road jersey are still the same. It is a navy blue colored cap or a helmet with the NY interlocked in white in front of the cap or the helmet.
Apart from this, the New York Yankees are also known to wear special jerseys related to special occasions and events related to the MLB. They are also notable for maintaining a pepper dress code and as such newcomers to the team have to maintain that standard.
New York Yankees Nicknames
The New York Yankees have received quite a few nicknames throughout their playing years till now. Their nickname “The Bronx Bombers” originated from the location of their home stadium, the Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. The team name “Yankees” has also received a shortened nickname called “The Yanks.”
“The Pinstripers” nickname came from the fact that the Yankees apparently adapted pinstripes so that the chubby Babe Ruth could look leaner for the spectators. “The Evil Empire” nickname was given by the Boston Red Sox President Larry Laucchino in December 2022. This was because the Yankees had signed a Red Sox Free agent called Jose Contreras back then. They had also signed Hideki Matsui.
In the past, the Yankees had signed Babe Ruth after his career with the Boston Red Sox. This again indicates the longstanding rivalry between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox.
