North Texas Mean Green Football History
The University of North Texas Mean Green football program, founded in 1913 as North Texas State Normal College, started under Professor J. W. Pender. After early years with mixed success, coach Jack Sisco led them to their first conference title in 1931. The Odus Mitchell era (1946–1966) marked significant success, including the team's first bowl victory in 1946. Hayden Fry's tenure (1973–1978) brought notable achievements, but financial challenges led to a demotion to Division I-AA. The program returned to Division I-A in 1995, joined the Sun Belt Conference in 2001, and later Conference USA in 2013. Recent years under coach Seth Littrell have shown improvement, with bowl appearances in 2014 and 2016.
