About Puerto Rico Open 2024

First held in 2008, the Puerto Rico Open is a PGA Tour professional golf competition. Puerto Rico has hosted just one PGA Tour tournament in its history. Tom Kite built the Coco Beach Golf Course, where the tournament is held. It was previously called the Trump International Golf Club Puerto Rico. It was held in early March as a stand-in event for the WGC-Cadillac Championship from its establishment until 2015. However, in 2016, it was shifted to late March in opposition to the WGC-Dell Match Play. The Golf Channel broadcasts all four rounds.

The event had been considered an unofficial "curse" on the PGA Tour, as no event winner had ever won another tournament. The only exception was Michael Bradley, who won the Puerto Rico Open for a second time in 2011, after winning his first in 2009, but never won another PGA Tour event. However, Viktor Hovland broke the "curse" when winning the Mayakoba Golf Classic in December 2020, having won the Puerto Rico Open earlier in the year.

Puerto Rico Open 2024 History

The Puerto Rico Open is quite an old tournament that hasn't lost its charm and is still going on! It was first played between 1956 and 1967. It was on a spout on the PGA-sponsored Caribbean Tour until 1965. Soon after 1965, the sponsors started rescheduling the event to later in the calendar year timings. Before it was revived as a PGA Tour event in 2008, the Puerto Rico Open came back as a stop on the Tour de las Américas in 2004 and 2005.

Puerto Rico Open 2024 Course

Grand Reserve, home to the Championship and International courses, is one of Puerto Rico's best-kept golf course secrets. It is situated in the Río Grande neighbourhood.

Previously identified as Trump International Puerto Rico and then as Coco Beach Golf & Country Club, the resort operates under the Hyatt Regency brand of lodging establishments. Tom Kite, a well-known Tour professional, created both courses. As one tees off towards the breathtaking forested slope of El Yunque National Park, Kite's quality and attention to detail are evident. While the Championship layout doesn't have the dramatic elevation changes of the International course's first nine, it nonetheless transports you on a comprehensive, immersive tour through various locales.
