3 high school standouts in Rhett Lashlee's SMU for the class of 2025 ft. Ty Hawkins

The SMU Mustangs began their 2024 campaign with a bang, winning their season opener against the Nevada Wolf Pack on Saturday. After a slow start to the game, the Mustangs picked up their performance and had a 16-0 fourth quarter to eventually win the game 29-24.

Although the 2024 CFB season has begun, the Mustangs are still actively looking to shore up their roster for the upcoming season. They have already landed commitments from 21 high school athletes from the class of 2025 and are set to add more in the forthcoming weeks.

The Texas-based college has one of the best recruiting classes of 2025 in the ACC. However, they are yet to land a five-star recruit from the class and will look to do so as soon as possible.

Let's take a look at the Mustangs' top three prospects from the class of 2025.

3 high school standouts in SMU

#3 Chinedu Onyeagoro

Chinedu Onyeagoro, the four-star recruit from Los Angeles, California, announced his commitment to Southern Methodist University on July 1 this year. He chose the Mustangs over other top schools such as Northwestern, California, Arizona, and Arizona State.

The 6-foot-2 athlete took an official visit with SMU in June and it "felt like home" on that trip. He opened up about his decision to commit to the Mustangs in an interview with On3.

"One of the main reasons why I picked SMU is because of the development," Onyeagoro told On3. "The coaches do a good job of that. They helped SMU go from ranked at the bottom in sacks per game to No. 2 in sacks per game in the country the next year. I think if you want to get developed as a defensive player, SMU is the place."

The California native is ranked no.242 nationally and is the 24th-best edge rusher from his class, as per 247Sports. He is also the 25th-best overall prospect from the state of California.

#2 Ty Hawkins

A four-star quarterback from IMG Academy, Ty Hawkins was heavily recruited by the Southern Methodist University Mustangs and that hard work paid off as the 6-foot-0.5 QB flipped his commitment from TCU to Rhett Lashlee's team on July 3 this year. He chose them over schools such as TCU, Baylor, Boston College, and California.

Hawkins spoke about his decision to flip his commitment and claimed that he saw more opportunity with the Mustangs than he did with TCU.

"This past weekend, I’ve just been talking with my parents a lot," the QB told On3. "I feel like at SMU I just have a better chance of playing early and it’s a really good opportunity there. It’s a great city, great location. I feel like something is brewing in Dallas, for sure."

Hawkins is ranked no.224 nationally and is the 16th-best player at his position from his class, as per 247Sports. He is also the 29th-best overall prospect from the state of Florida.

#1 Dramodd Odoms

Dramodd Odoms is SMU's best signing so far from the class of 2025. The four-star offensive tackle announced his pledge to the Mustangs on July 4 this year and picked the Texas-based program over other schools such as Mississippi State, Arkansas, Baylor, and Purdue.

Odoms took official visits with SMU, Purdue, and Mississippi State, but he enjoyed the feeling at the Mustangs' campus the most. He spoke about it after making the visit.

"It was a vibe," the 6-foot-6 offensive lineman told On3. "I liked it a lot."

Odoms is ranked no.57 nationally and is the seventh-best offensive tackle from the class of 2025, as per 247Sports. He is also the 9th-best overall prospect from the state of Texas.
