3 Takeaways from High School Football Trinity League Week 1

The Trinity League in Southern California kicked off its football season on Friday with a showcase of top-tier competition and nail-biting finishes. All six teams were ranked within the top 50 of the High School Football America 300 national rankings, which are powered by NFL Play Football.

3 Takeaways from High School Football Trinity League Week 1

#3. Mater Dei’s depth proves crucial in victory over Santa Margarita

Mater Dei, which was placed third in the country, had to work hard for a 40-18 victory over Santa Margarita, which was 41st, in a close game. The Monarchs only had a 16-10 lead, and Santa Margarita never seemed to slow down throughout the period.

Being without some key personnel, including their coach, Anthony Rouzier (suspended on administrative leave), Santa Margarita began well, surprising Mater Dei with a quick 7-0 lead.

It was the outstanding performance of running back Jordan Davison that powered Mater Dei to victory. Davison, an Oregon commit, turned the game in Mater Dei’s favor with a 64-yard touchdown run—one of his two scores for the night.

Mater Dei's offense rallied behind him, especially when starting quarterback Dash Beierly went down with an injury. Backup quarterback Daily Clinton filled in admirably, throwing two touchdown passes to secure the win.

#2. St. John Bosco rides freshman QB to thrilling comeback

In a game full of drama, No. 2-ranked St. John Bosco edged out No. 12 Orange Lutheran with a 28-24 victory, thanks to a stunning performance by freshman quarterback Koa Malau’ulu.

Filling in for the injured starter Matai Fuiava, Malau’ulu endured a rocky start, completing only three of nine passes for 45 yards in the first half. The Braves found themselves down 10-0 at halftime.

But what happened next was nothing short of remarkable. In the second half, Malau’ulu found his groove, completing 20 of 22 passes and throwing four touchdown passes to lead St. John Bosco to a comeback. The second half saw five lead changes, with Malau’ulu finishing with 270 yards and one interception.

#1. Servite shuts down JSerra to stay unbeaten

In another clash of ranked opponents, No. 46 Servite bested No. 36 JSerra Catholic with a 20-7 win in what was a battle of unbeatens. Servite’s defense held JSerra scoreless in the first quarter before both teams traded leads in the second.

With a 12-yard touchdown run, JSerra's Ryan Hopkins briefly put his team ahead of the score with 7-6. Nevertheless, Servite came up with an extraordinary drive of 87 yards and 13 plays and thus regained the lead with a result of 12-7 at halftime.

The Friars never looked back, scoring another touchdown in the second half to solidify their victory. Servite made it to 5-5 in its last 10 meetings with JSerra, and the team seems ready to go into the MaxPreps Top 25 for the first time since 2021 with this win.
