Aaliyah Chavez reacts after receiving impressive dime from teammate Ambrosia Cole vs. Lubbock
No. 1 ranked uncommitted point guard Aaliyah Chavez has formed a dynamic duo with teammate Ambrosia Cole as Monterey's vaunted 1-2 punch. The duo showed off their teamwork on Friday's game against the Lubbock Westerners, with Cole handing out an impressive lob pass in transition to her five-star teammate. Chavez then shared a video of the lob and shot on her Instagram Stories.
Here is the original video, which was shared by Ambrosia Cole:
Monterey won that game 72-36, improving the team's record to 28-4. Aaliyah Chavez had 25 points against Lubbock, while Ambrosia Cole had 18 in the win. Chavez previously scored 42 points during an 83-28 win over Caprock on Tuesday, while her co-captain, Ambrosia, had 17.
Cole, an unranked and unstarred junior guard, had been working well with Chavez throughout the season and is the Monterey Lady Plainsmen's second scoring option.
The win against Lubbock was Monterey's sixth in a row, with their last loss coming in a road game against Frenship last Dec. 28, with the final score of 70-60. The Lady Plainsmen are considered contenders for a state title, and that is the reason why Aaliyah Chavez chose to stay with her hometown school instead of going to a prep school and forming a super team.
Aaliyah Chavez's choice of college still looming
As for where Aaliyah Chavez will go after high school, the No. 1 ranked overall from the Class of 2025 is now down to her top five choices after LSU decided not to move forward in recruiting her. These five schools are South Carolina, UCLA, Oklahoma, Texas, and Texas Tech.
The dark horse in the race for Chavez seems to be South Carolina, but the school's winning tradition and her admiration for head coach Dawn Staley may give the Gamecocks an edge. As for UCLA, the point guard was more than impressed with the Bruins when they rolled out the red carpet for her visit.
Chavez has also expressed that she wants to play near her hometown of Lubbock, Texas, and this is where Texas and Oklahoma come in, with Oklahoma being the nearest of the two schools. However, when it comes to distance, Texas Tech is the favorite as the school is located in Lubbock itself and is more than willing to shell out money and build a team around its hometown hero.
