Did Travis Hunter commit to FSU? A look at 2024 Heisman Trophy winner’s signing journey
Travis Hunter, the Colorado Buffaloes' superstar, won the Heisman Trophy on Saturday night. He was in the race for the trophy along with Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty, who came in second, and Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel, who grabbed the third spot.
Hunter had a tremendous year on both sides of the ball and became only the second Buffalo to win the prestigious award, after running back Rashaan Salaam in 1994. However, Hunter did not begin his college career in Colorado.
The 2022 five-star recruit was one of the best high school players in the country. He dominated both sides of the ball and established himself as one of the best overall athletes from the Class of 2022. His immense talent did not go unnoticed as he received offers from some of the best D-1 colleges in the country.
Travis Hunter's recruitment process saw him committing to Florida State University in March 2020. However, that pledge did not materialize in his signing with the program as he flipped his commitment from the Seminoles to Jackson State on National Signing Day in 2021.
The then five-star prospect chose the Jackson State Tigers over top schools such as Georgia, Alabama, Texas, Oklahoma, Michigan, Tennessee and Clemson.
Travis Hunter ended his high school career with 50 touchdowns
The former Collins Hill High School's combo athlete, Travis Hunter, had a great high school career. The 2022 five-star prospect racked up 4,121 total yards and 50 touchdowns during his four years with the Collins Hill Eagles.
He also caught 19 interceptions and 116 total tackles as a defensive back. Hunter's best season came in 2021 when he tallied 1,746 yards and 24 touchdowns while helping his team win 12 of 15 games. He also logged eight interceptions and 51 total tackles.
Hunter followed that up with another 1,000-yard receiving season, tallying 1,284 yards and 12 touchdowns while grabbing four interceptions and recording 25 total tackles.
The former five-star recruit was ranked No. 2 in the country and was the best athlete in the Class of 2022, as per On3. He was also the best overall prospect from the state of Georgia and was named the Georgia Player of the Year in 2021 and 2022.
