"He was a 4 star at 5'2"?" Hoops fans react to Youtuber IShowSpeed's claims about being recruited by Ohio State, Michigan, and Clemson
Hoops fans had a field day over Youtuber IShowSpeed's claims of being recruited by Ohio State, Michigan and Clemson. The digital creator appeared on Thursday's episode of the "360 With Speedy Morman" podcast on Complex YouTube Channel. When host Speedy asked what games he used to play, Speed came up with some bold claims that Hoops fans couldn't digest.
“I was a 4 star/5 star at Ohio," Speed claimed.
“I was a four-star five-star. Yep, you can look me up my name. I was. I was a four star five star ... really trying to recruit me like Ohio State, Michigan, Clemson, all of that,” he added.
The clip reshared by MaxPreps’ Instagram account with the caption “Do you believe Speed?” quickly went viral, drawing a wave of hilarious reactions.
One fan quipped:
“He was a 4-star at 5’2?”
“I was Gatorade player of the year,” one fan said.
“Bro want to be an athlete so bad,” another fan said.
Here are some more reactions from fans.
“My Boy was trash don't let him fool you,” one fan said.
“No nobody believe speed but kids,” another fan said.
One hoop fan particularly stood out with his humorous jab at IShowSpeed’s story, saying:
“Ya he was a 4 or 5 star…I am also in the NBA hall of fame and hold the NBA record for pts…And no I am not LBJ”
Hoops fans certainly went berserk over Speed’s claim, but does it hold any ground, or is it a mere gimmick?
Has IShowSpeed Ever Played Basketball?
IShowSpeed, whose real name is Darren Watkins Jr., hails from Cincinnati, Ohio. Interestingly, Speed does have some basketball experience. According to Hudl.com, Speed used to play for Purcell Marian High School, Cincinnati, OH, at the point guard and shooting guard positions. Nothing much is available as far as his basketball stats go.
On Sep. 11, he was seen playing against a kid in his podcast during his Philippines trip. However, the 1v1 clash didn't go well for the YouTuber. The kid outperformed Speed several times, and the Youtuber slipped twice during the game. Later, Speed claimed the court to be too slippery.
Speed’s basketball career didn't go far; however, the digital creator found success online. Known for his comedic and exaggerated personality, IShowSpeed has become a social media sensation. He has over 33 million subscribers on YouTube, while he enjoys a 35.8 million strong fanbase on TikTok.
