“I treat social media as a job”: Eli Ellis describes online struggles & “false narratives” on LSU star Flau’jae Johnson’s podcast
Eli Ellis, a four-star recruit and No. 68 prospect in the Class of 2025 will head to South Carolina next season. The shooting guard appeared at LSU's Flau'jae Johnson's "Best of Both Worlds" podcast on Dec. 13.
In one of the videos posted on Instagram by the "Best of Both Worlds with Flau’jae" podcast, Eli Ellis talked about the importance of social media and how seriously he takes that:
"I kind of treat social media as a job. Basketball is my job, but social media is also a job, and I realize it's a short window to be able to change my life forever through social media. You really have the beginning of high school to the end of college, if you don't make it to the NBA, of course," said Ellis.
He continued to talk about the challenges of social media:
"The social media side is really hard because you can't even get on your phone anymore because every time you look, it's somebody saying something negative or starting false narratives."
Eli Ellis also shared a piece of advice given to him by his father:
"There's one thing that my dad said. He goes, only take advice from people you would switch places with. That's the only time I listen to people. If they have good advice for me, even if it's negative advice, that's the only reason I listen to them."
Eli Ellis ranks at the 19th spot among shooting guards and third overall in North Carolina. He earned the Overtime Elite MVP award after finishing as the league's highest scorer, averaging 33.4 points, 6.1 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 1.8 steals per game last season.
Eli Ellis calls South Carolina an underdog
With offers from programs such as Winthrop, Mississippi State and Ole Miss, among others, Ellis chose South Carolina on Nov. 15 and has already signed with the Gamecocks. He said this about his commitment, per On3:
“I chose South Carolina because my whole life I’ve been an underdog,” Ellis said. “That’s where I thrive and that’s when I’m my best. South Carolina are the underdogs and everybody loves an underdog. I also chose USC because of how much it reminded me of home. On my visit, it felt like I had to go there.”
Eli Ellis became the Gamecocks' fourth signing from the 2025 Class. Before him, head coach Lamont Paris secured commitments from three-star prospects EJ Walker, Grank Polk and Hayden Assemian.
