"It helped": AJ Dybantsa reveals how living in Utah influenced his decision to commit to BYU
AJ Dybantsa has started acclimatizing to Utah as he currently plays for Utah Prep in the town of Hurricane in the state's southern portion. The five-star BYU signee spoke with Spencer and Jarom at the BYUtv Sports Nation YouTube channel and opened up about what it has been like living in Utah and how it influenced his decision to stay in the state and play for BYU.
The No. 1 ranked player in high school has been living peacefully in Hurricane and noted that nobody "bothers" him over there.
"I mean I only like it cuz nobody bothers me," he answered. "I can go to the Walmart like once a week and I'm good." (5:36-5:47)
When asked about what living in Hurricane did to influence his decision to sign with BYU and if he did not live there, would he still sign with BYU, he said:
"Yeah, I mean it helped, definitely," AJ Dybantsa answered. "Just being in Utah. like I mean. I just like the environment, like Salt Lake is different than Hurricane. Hurricane's like, way peaceful, Salt Lake is like a city and stuff, but I mean it's just good, the state's good so I was like, I'm gonna stay here."
Before coming to Hurricane to play for Utah Prep, AJ Dybantsa was in Napa, California, and playing with fellow five-star Tyran Stokes at Prolific Prep. Before that, he played for St. Sebastian and lived in his hometown of Brockton, Massachusetts. In his freshman year alone, he led the school to a 26–2 record and to the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council Class A title game.
He was originally part of the Class of 2026 with Tyran Stokes but reclassified after his sophomore year at Prolific Prep when he enrolled in Utah Prep.
