Lincoln Riley lands commitment from Georgia native 3-star WR James Johnson
Three-star prospect James Johnson from Douglas County High School in Douglasville, Georgia, announced his commitment to USC's 2025 class on Friday. The wide receiver picked the Trojans over Georgia, LSU, Ohio State and UCF.
Johnson has made a name for himself across multiple positions. Standing at 5-foot-10 and weighing 181 pounds, he has proved his caliber not only as a wide receiver but also as a quarterback, cornerback, safety, running back and linebacker.
Johnson's athleticism has made him a standout at Douglas County, where Georgia High School Football Daily him named the Class 6A preseason offensive player of the year in north Georgia. On3 places him as the nation’s No. 86 wide receiver in the 2025 class and the No. 58 prospect in Georgia, while ESPN ranks him as the No. 53 wide receiver and No. 44 prospect in the state.
The Trojans want Johnson as a defensive back, which will allow him to utilize his athleticism in their secondary. He is a multi-sport athlete, contributing to Douglas County's basketball and baseball teams.
Why did James Johnson commit to USC?
Interestingly, James Johnson committed to USC despite never officially visiting the campus. The Trojans offered him a scholarship last year, and since then, the coaching staff has made him a top priority.
“The communication with coach D’Anton Lynn and coach Doug Belk has been great," Johnson shared with On3. "They have been reaching out every day and showing a lot of love. That helped me make my decision.
"Both coach Lynn and coach Belk are great guys and they always have that positive energy," Johnson said. "They are good coaches, they are fun to talk to and I like them a lot.'
Johnson's commitment was also influenced by Lincoln Riley.
“I have talked with coach Lincoln Riley too," he added. "He is a cool coach and it is exciting to think about playing for him at USC.”
Johnson's commitment marks him as the fifth player from Georgia to join USC's 2025 recruiting class. He follows in the footsteps of quarterback Julian Lewis, linebacker Jadon Perlotte, safety Kendarius Reddick and cornerback Shamar Arnoux.
With James Johnson's commitment, USC's 2025 recruiting class now ranks No. 16 nationally. The program also remains high on several 2025 class prospects, including running back D'Shaun Ford and defensive lineman Walter Mathis Jr.
