Who is Magic Johnson's nephew Mazi Mosley? All we know about the latest addition to LSU Tigers' 2025 recruiting class
NBA legend Magic Johnson's nephew, Mazi Mosley, committed to the LSU Tigers on Monday, 10 days after visiting them. Mosley ranks at the 75th spot in the 2025 ESPN 100 Recruiting Database and is a four-star recruit according to ESPN, 247Sports, Rivals and On3.
Born on Feb. 12, 2006, the La Cañada Flintridge, California, native Mosley said that he did not aspire to play basketball in an interview with League Ham.
“I didn’t have aspirations to play basketball at all at the start,” Mosley said.
Mosley played baseball for 10 years, playing shortstop and center field before turning 14. In fact, in Mosley's high school, some kids told him to stick to baseball or football. However, he took that as a challenge, and that has brought him where he is currently.
“One day I was playing basketball and I’ll never forget this, a kid told me to stick to baseball after scoring on me. I got mad. I started working out,” he said.
Mazi's father, John Mosley, has been the long-time coach of East Los Angeles College. Entering his 12th season with the team, John was named among the 50 Most Impactful Coaches in JUCO men's basketball.
Apart from being a talented basketball player, Mazi Mosley is also a terrific student, according to five-time NBA champion Magic Johnson. Johnson also talked about Mosley and his life off the court.
"Mazi is just as good off the court as he’s an honor student, too!" Johnson said. "I am so proud of you and am happy your hard work is being recognized by schools all over the country! Keep it up."
Mazi Mosley took to Instagram to confirm his commitment. The 6-foot-5 Montverde Academy shooting guard had interest from colleges like California, Georgia Tech, Iowa, USC, Michigan, Xavier, San Diego State and more. Before joining Montverde, Mosley suited up for St. Francis High School in La Canada, California.
Meanwhile, Johnson also announced his nephew's commitment with a post on X.
"Congratulations, Mazi! I’m so proud of you and can’t wait to cheer you on next season at LSU! Follow Mazi along on his journey," Johnson wrote.
Mazi Mosley took his official visit to LSU on Sept. 20. While talking with 247Sports, Mosley explained his decision to choose LSU and discussed coach Matt McMahon.
"It was fun," Mosley said of his time at LSU. "I liked what Coach McMahon had to offer. I also liked the atmosphere of LSU.
"I chose LSU because I enjoyed the culture they have there. I also like what coach McMahon has to offer, developing guards and he is big on details."
What does the addition of Mazi Mosley mean for the LSU Tigers?
Mazi Mosley made it to the 2024 Top 100 camp and averaged 11.3 points, 3.1 rebounds and 3.3 assists per contest. Additionally, in UAA Session III, Mosley scored 12.2 points and grabbed 3.8 boards per game.
The Montverde Academy player also secured a top-five scorer spot, averaging 22.5 points, according to Sports Illustrated. 247Sports Director of Scouting Adam Finkelstein also spoke highly of Mosley's potential:
"He's a skilled guard with good size who is just scratching the surface of his potential. LSU has shown a willingness to invest the time in developing these high upside long-term prospects under Matt McMahon, and in Mozley's case, it could really pay off."
So far, LSU has recruited three four-star players, including Robert Miller, Curtis Given III and Vyctorius Miller, and a three-star power forward, Noah Boyde. With the addition of Mazi Mosley, McMahon will look to improve from their last season, in which they finished at the eighth spot in the Southeastern Conference.
