Moana 2 scores $52M, breaking post-Thanksgiving weekend records in North America
Disney’s Moana 2 has sailed into record-breaking territory. It set the biggest post-Thanksgiving weekend box office numbers in North America with a massive $52 million, according to the Associated Press. The animated sequel surpassed the previous record held by Frozen II, which earned $35.2 million during the same period of one of the busiest movie-going times of the year.
Released on November 27, Moana 2 has already grossed an impressive $300 million domestically in just 12 days. Over its second weekend, it earned $52 million despite experiencing a 63% drop from its explosive opening weekend. The figure contributed to the film’s current global total of $600 million, with international markets providing an equal $300 million boost.
The movie has performed exceptionally well across major territories, including France ($18.8M opening), the UK ($15.5M), and Mexico ($11.1M). With additional markets such as Japan and Hong Kong yet to open, Moana 2 is projected to reach a domestic total of $465-$515 million by the end of its run.
Moana 2’s $175M gamble pays off with a $300M box office milestone in just 12 days
Disney’s Moana 2 has an estimated production budget ranging between $150-$175 million. Yet, in just 12 days since its release on November 27, the film has already made a staggering $300 million domestically, which proved the studio’s investment was a resounding success.
A substantial budget went into high-quality animation, a star-studded voice cast including Auli’I Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson, and an expansive marketing campaign. Disney capitalized on the massive fanbase of the first Moana while introducing new elements like a fresh plot and eye-catching visuals to draw in both returning and new audiences.
Opening in over 4,200 theaters, Moana 2 dominated the Thanksgiving box office, achieving a record-breaking $221 million during its five-day debut. Its ability to rake in another $35 million during the post-Thanksgiving weekend, coupled with strong global appeal, solidified its path to profitability. International markets also played a key role, contributing $300 million to its worldwide total of $600 million.
Directed by David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller, the film marked their first time leading a feature. The filmmakers worked closely with cultural experts to ensure the movie stayed true to Pacific Islander traditions and storytelling.
The music was composed by Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, the youngest all-female duo to score a Disney film. Advanced animation techniques were used to create highly detailed visuals, especially for the ocean scenes. The team spent years researching and collaborating with Pacific communities to capture the authentic essence of Oceania.
What is Moana 2 about?
Moana 2 picks up several years after the events of the first film. Moana is now a confident leader of her people, balancing the responsibilities of guiding her tribe. But her journey takes a dramatic turn when she begins having mysterious dreams of her ancestors, calling her to venture further than she ever has before. These visions hint at a hidden threat looming over Oceania, one that could disrupt the delicate balance of life in the ocean and on the islands.
Determined to uncover the truth, Moana sets out on a daring expedition beyond the familiar waters. Along the way, she reunites with Maui, the demigod, who is initially reluctant but eventually joins her on this quest. Together, they discover an ancient secret—a lost world deep in the ocean that holds the key to the survival of all island nations.
As the plot progresses, Moana faces new challenges, including treacherous seas, mythical creatures, and her inner fears. The sequel explores themes of legacy, courage, and connection to one’s roots.
