In My Old Ass, we are introduced to a carefree teenager Elliot, played by Maisy Stella. She has turned 18 and is soon to leave her hometown and go to the University of Toronto. One day she decides to get high with her friends Ro and Ruthie in the woods.

While her friends are high on mushrooms, Elliot is visited by her older self, played by Aubrey Plaza. Older Elliot starts giving younger Elliot different life advice, without revealing much about herself. Her most important advice for her younger self was to spend more time with her family and stay away from anyone named Chad.

During this whole time, Elliot thinks that she is having a bad trip, but the next morning, after chatting with the older Elliot, she realizes what is happening. She starts spending time with her family and avoids Chad, played by Percy Hynes White, who has come to town for the summer and is working on her father's farm.

Elliot tries to avoid Chad but finds herself getting attracted to him. She also realizes that her s*xuality is more complex than she used to think. In the climax of My Old Ass, it is revealed that older Elliot wanted her younger self to stay away from Chad to save her from pain because he is eventually going to die, and there is nothing she would be able to do about it.

In My Old Ass, younger Elliot decides to love Chad despite the pain it will bring

Elliot tries very hard to maintain a distance from Chad and is able to avoid him as older Elliot constantly reminds her of the mission. However, one day Elliot is unable to reach older Elliot.

In the absence of her older self, Elliot started developing feelings for Chad as she felt 'safe and supported' by him. A few days later when older Elliot comes back, she finds her younger self kissing Chad and gets mad at her. The older Elliot tells her younger self about Chad's fate.

Young Elliot refuses to stop falling in love with Chad despite the pain it is going to bring in the future. She says that she can't stop spending time with her friends and family because one day they are going to die, and she is going to love Chad for however long she can.

Older Elliot learns to accept her decisions in My Old Ass

After listening to Elliot's decision about loving Chad despite his fate, older Elliot expresses that her hasty and emotional decision is the outcome of her age and lack of maturity. Elliot reverts that maybe being young and dumb isn't such as bad thing as it gives people the freedom to fully live life, without thinking about the past or the future.

Their conversation is interrupted by Chad, who has come back to return Elliot's t-shirt. Seeing Chad again after perhaps his death, older Elliot becomes visibly emotional with a single tear falling down her cheek. She sees her younger self looking at Chad with love and remembers how alive love made her feel.

In the emotional scene, she hugs Chad goodbye and sends Elliot one last message saying she never realized how wise her younger self was and that she should live her life without worrying about the future or getting stuck in the past because that is not living.

My Old Ass is available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
