While they have a series of stormy and chaotic romantic encounters in the beginning, their priorities eventually align, and the couple grows from being friends to lovers and then to parents over a multi-year span. However, there is no happily ever after in this romantic journey as Almut discovers she has ovarian cancer, which puts a strain on their relationship. Still, the couple always makes their way back to each other.
Does Tobias and Almut get married and have kids?
Tobias and Almut had a rocky start to their relationship and were divided on the possibility of having kids. However, they rekindle their relationship, and for a while, their future appears to be looking up before Almut reveals that she has ovarian cancer. It is recommended that she get a hysterectomy to prevent the disease from spreading. This would mean she would not be able to have a child.
Almut goes through a series of painful treatments but does not get a full hysterectomy so that she can bear a child. When her cancer eventually goes into remission, the couple focuses on their efforts to become parents.
After months of trying, Almut conceives and eventually gives birth in the most chaotic way possible at a local gas station. We Live in Time then shows the couple sharing a brief period of total happiness, with Almut landing her dream job at a high-end restaurant and Tobias soaking in all the joy of becoming a father.
However, their brief period of bliss is finally broken when Almut learns that the cancer has returned and that she will need to go into chemotherapy immediately. Although apprehensive about going back into treatment, Almut commits to saving her own life after when Tobias asks her to marry him.
Almut's cooking competition
When Almut is invited to participate in the Bocuse d'Or cooking competition, an intensive event that brings together some of the greatest chefs in the world to compete, everything else takes a backseat. She commits herself to its preparation without telling Tobias, and the strenuous event pushes her body to its physical limitations.
When Almut's competition and their wedding dates clash, Tobias and Almut get into a bitter argument when he discovers that she has been neglecting her health for the competition. Despite being angry with her, Tobias ultimately decides to cancel the wedding plans so that Almut can go to the next level of the finals and attends the event with their daughter to support Almut.
Almut wins the competition despite her deteriorating health and having to rely on her assistant chef, Jade, due to her frail state. Tobias and their daughter cheer her on, and she is encouraged to the end. We Live in Time then shows the family leaving the arena together.
Does Almut die at the end of We Live in Time?
While We Live in Time does not show Almut dying on screen, it ends with a scene where we see the family going ice skating, and it is implied that this would be the last thing they ever did together.
We Live In Time draws to a close with Tobias and his daughter returning to their farm with their adopted dog. This reminds viewers about the joke Almut made earlier in the film about being “replaced,” and we know that it has finally happened—she is no more.
We Live In Time is a heart-wrenching romantic drama about a normal and everyday story of love and the importance of preserving what little time we have together. Although Tobias is devastated by the loss of a partner, the film ends on a feel-good note, allowing the audience to feel uplifted by the fact that Tobias' dream of becoming a father has come true and that he will be a good parent to their daughter.
