3 least impressive Ottawa Senators players from 3-1 loss to Edmonton Oilers feat. Tim Stutzle

The Ottawa Senators entered their contest on Sunday night against the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place red-hot. The Sens had won six consecutive games and put some distance between themselves and their competition in the Atlantic Division.

They faced an Oilers team that was coming off consecutive overtime victories thanks in large part to defenseman Mattias Ekholm, who notched the overtime winner against Boston followed by the late game-tying goal against San Jose.

When it was all said and done, the Oilers were right back in the win column but didn't need extra time beyond regulation to do so. They defeated the Senators 3-1 to halt their winning streak and improve their record to 21-11-2, while the Senators fell to 18-14-2.

Viktor Arvidsson opened the scoring with just his third goal of the season for the Oilers, giving them the 1-0 lead.

Early in the second period, Nick Cousins knotted the score at 1-1 with his fifth goal just 25 seconds after the opening face-off. But the ever increasingly hot Zach Hyman scored his 13th goal after a costly penalty committed by the Senators.

Early in the 3rd period, veteran Oilers forward Adam Henrique scored his third goal, and that would cap the scoring. Edmonton held on for the 3-1 victory, causing the Senators to lose for the first time since a 4-2 setback against the New York Islanders on December 8.

Stuart Skinner made 20 saves in a winning effort for the Oilers, while Linus Ullmark departed with an upper-body injury for the Senators after stopping six of seven shots; he was replaced in goal by Leevi Merilaine, who stopped 12 of 14 shots.

3 least impressive Ottawa Senators players from 3-1 loss to Edmonton Oilers

#1. Tim Stutzle

One of Ottawa's most consistent performers since being selected in the 2020 NHL Draft, Stutzle wasn't much of a factor for the Senators during Sunday's loss against the Oilers.

Not only did he finish without any points, but he was also a -2 with a pair of giveaways.

#2. Travis Hamonic

Hamonic had a particularly rough game on Sunday night, finishing with a -2 rating. He also committed a costly giveaway that resulted in a high-danger scoring opportunity for the Oilers.

#3. Jake Sanderson

Like Hamonic, Sanderson also finished with a -2 rating and failed to defend against Edmonton's top guns.

While it wasn't his worst performance of the season, Sanderson has had far better outings and will be looking to put this game behind him.
