3 NHL teams that could take a gamble on signing Yaroslav Askarov

Nashville Predators’ netminder Yaroslav Askarov has requested a trade out of Music City, per The Hockey News. Heading into this offseason, it looked as though Yaroslav Askarov was poised to become the Preds’ number-one goaltender. But after signing Juuse Saros to an eight-year extension and Scott Wedgewood to a two-year deal, Askarov suddenly looks like the odd man out.

With that situation in mind, Askarov’s trade request opens the door for other NHL teams to bring in the young goalie to backstop their clubs. So, here’s a look at three teams that could take a chance on Askarov this season.

3 NHL teams that could take a gamble on signing Yaroslav Askarov

#3: Montreal Canadiens

The Habs seem set on Samuel Monteambeault being their starter for this upcoming season. However, as the Canadiens look poised to emerge from their rebuild, adding a potential number-one goalie seems too good to pass up.

As such, the Habs could deal for Askarov, especially considering the stockpile of young talent and draft picks. Askarov could easily jump into training camp as the potential starter, giving Montreal the best goaltending prospect since drafting Carey Price.

#2: San Jose Sharks

The Sharks have been busy this offseason, adding as much talent as possible to complement number-one overall pick Macklin Celebrini. However, they lack a true number-one goaltender.

Heading into this season, the tandem of Mackenzie Blackwood and Vitek Vanacek, while serviceable, doesn’t look like a long-term solution. Thus, adding Askarov could instantly boost the Sharks’ potential to compete in this upcoming season. Like the Habs, the Sharks have the prospects and draft picks to get a deal done quickly.

#1: Columbus Blue Jackets

With all the turmoil in Columbus, one area that’s been overlooked is the goaltender. Current starter Elvis Merzlikins has been underwhelming. As such, the Blue Jackets cannot afford to pass up the opportunity to add a number-one goaltending prospect to the club.

While Merzlikins is entering the third year of a five-year deal, the Blue Jackets could potentially keep Merzlikins, while Askarov settles into the starting role. Meanwhile, Daniil Tarasov, the current backup, could become expendable.

Now, the plan wouldn’t be for Askarov to back up Merzlikins. The plan would be for Askarov to ease into the starting role, allowing him to get settled in without the pressure of carrying the team straight out of training.

An interesting twist for Columbus could be to include Patrik Laine in the trade. Such a deal could solve issues for both clubs, helping each team focus on the season ahead.
