3 PTO signings Boston Bruins may consider before preseason starts feat. Martin Jones

Heading into training camp, the Boston Bruins have nearly $9 million in available cap space. However, much of that cap space will be allocated to restricted free agent goaltender Jeremy Swayman if and when he signs with the Bruins.

In the meantime, three players stand out as potential professional tryout, or PTO, signings the Boston Bruins can consider as the team looks to round out its roster ahead of the regular season. So, here’s a look at three PTO candidates for the Boston Bruins to consider.

3 PTO signings Boston Bruins may consider before preseason starts

#3: Nick Bonino

Bonino spent last season with the New York Rangers. In 45 games, he recorded five points.

Naturally, Bonino fits into Boston’s overall lineup as a bottom-six forward, mainly as a depth fourth liner. At this point, the 36-year-old could help out in case of injury, especially if John Beecher or Matthew Poitras go down.

Bonino could be a solid insurance policy costing no more than league minimum. In the worst of cases, the Bruins could waive Bonino, which costs the club nothing.

#2: Travis Dermott

Speaking of insurance, Travis Dermott could provide the Boston Bruins with a solid seventh defenseman option. While the Bruins’ top six blueliners look set, the seventh defenseman spot could be open.

If Dermott has an excellent camp, he could be the first man up in case of injury. In the best of cases, Dermott could sneak into the bottom pairing, if need be.

Dermott spent last season with the Arizona Coyotes, chipping in seven points in 50 games. At 28-years-old, Dermott could provide solid play, while coming in at a very team-friendly deal.

#1: Martin Jones

When the Bruins traded impending free agent Linus Ullmark, the belief was that Jeremy Swayman would instantly be anointed as the team’s starting goaltender. While that remains the plan, the reality is that Swayman is still a restricted free agent.

As such, there is significant uncertainty surrounding the Bruins’ goaltending situation. As it stands, Swayman might sit out training camp, at which point, projected back up Joonas Korpisalo would take over the starting role.

While Korpisalo has been a starter before, the Bruins didn’t intend him to be. Regardless, the Bruins would need a capable backup to support him. With some relatively thin options behind Korpisalo, Boston would do well to pick up a veteran backup as insurance.

Enter Martin Jones.

Jones spent last season with the Toronto Maple Leafs, serving as insurance. Jones came when both Leafs goaltenders Ilya Samsonov and Joseph Woll were hurt. In his brief stint, Jones played well. He kept the Leafs afloat during in a period in which the team could have imploded.

The Bruins could certainly use Jones as insurance, especially since there is no telling when Swayman may be ready to hit the ice.
