3 PTO signings Utah Hockey Club could consider before preseason

For the first time in history, the National Hockey League now features a franchise in Utah. Following years of financial instability and ownership problems, the Arizona Coyotes split to Salt Lake City and will begin play next month for the 2024-25 season.

Known currently only as the Utah Hockey Club, the official mascot and logo have yet to be decided upon. But for now, the team roster appears mostly complete as they make preparations to begin Training Camp this week.

Considering the number of players still awaiting deals for the upcoming year, what are some names that Utah could consider extending a PTO toward in addition to Kailer Yamamoto?

#1. Tony DeAngelo

Currently, DeAngelo is without a contract for the upcoming 2024-25 season after having played last year in his second stint with the Carolina Hurricanes. Known for his skating and offensive abilities, DeAngelo didn't produce last season at his normal rate, dropping to just 11 points scored after having amassed 70 the prior year.

Additionally, he was frequently designated a healthy scratch by head coach Rod Brind'Amour. But given DeAngelo's strength in playing the point on the man advantage, Utah could look to improve their 15th-ranked power play from last season.

Receiving a potential PTO from the Utah Hockey Club would technically be his second go-around with the team, as he previously played with the Coyotes before they relocated to their current home of Salt Lake City.

In 371 career games played with the Coyotes, Hurricanes, Rangers, and Flyers, DeAngelo has totaled 48 goals with 162 assists.

#2. Dustin Tokarski

A veteran goaltender looking to extend his NHL career, Tokrski could provide an intriguing option for Utah to consider when it comes to depth at the position.

Having mostly played in the American Hockey League throughout his career, Tokarski has 80 games of NHL experience under his belt, and wouldn't come at a high cost.

Utah is set with the tandem of Connor Ingram and Karel Vejmelka, but Tokarski would be available to not only play in the minors but to play backup in the event of an injury to either of the latter.

#3. Blake Wheeler

Already in the twilight of his NHL career, the former Winnipeg Jets captain played last season with the New York Rangers and remains unsigned.

At 38 years of age, his most productive years are behind him. However, he could represent an inexpensive option to continue his playing days while also providing mentorship to the younger players on the Utah roster.

In 1,172 career NHL games, Wheeler has scored 321 goals with 622 assists, while adding another 10 goals and 35 assists in 66 playoff games.
