5 Toronto Maple Leafs brother duos who have played in the same game feat. Nylander brothers
The Toronto Maple Leafs made history on Sunday as William and Alex Nylander became the fifth brother duo to play in the same game. The feat occurred against the Utah Hockey Club, a game which the Maple Leafs won 3–2 in a tight-checking contest.
However, the Nylander brothers are not the only siblings to suit up for the Leafs in the same contest. According to James Mirtle of The Athletic, William and Alex Nylander are the fifth brother duo to play for the Leafs in the same game.
So, here’s a look at the five brother duos who have played in the same game for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
5 brother duos who have played in the same game for the Toronto Maple Leafs
#5 Don and Nick Metz
Don and Nick Metz played for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1940s. They were part of a powerhouse Maple Leafs team that won multiple Stanley Cups in that era. They played for seven seasons in Toronto, suiting up for 148 games together. The Metz brothers are the duo that has played the most games together in a Maple Leafs uniform.
#4 Barry and Brian Cullen
Barry and Brian Cullen played for the Maple Leafs in the 1950s. Brian debuted for the Maple Leafs in 1954, while Barry joined the team in 1955. The duo played in a Maple Leafs uniform for 140 games until Barry ended his career in 1960 while playing with the Detroit Red Wings.
Unfortunately, the Cullen brothers had a relatively short playing career, failing to gain much recognition individually.
#3 Art and Busher Jackson
Ralph “Busher” Jackson played with the Toronto Maple Leafs from 1929 to 1939. Meanwhile, his brother Arthur Jackson suited up for Toronto from 1934 to 1937, returning in 1944. In total, the Jackson brothers appeared in 87 games together as members of the Maple Leafs.
#2 Miroslav and Peter Ihnacak
It would be a few decades before the Maple Leafs would have another brother duo play together. Miroslav and Peter Ihnacak suited up for 43 games in a Maple Leafs uniform in the 1980s.
Peter played for the Leafs from 1982 to 1990. He held the team record for most points by a rookie in a season with 66 until Auston Matthews broke the mark in 2017.
Miroslav played in parts with the Maple Leafs from 1985 to 1987. The Ihnacak brothers appeared in 43 games together, last playing together in 1987.
#1 William and Alex Nylander
Thirty-seven years after the Inhacak brothers, the Nylander duo played for the Maple Leafs. Wiliam was Toronto’s first-round selection in 2014 (8th overall), while Alex was the Buffalo Sabres’ first-rounder in 2016 (also 8th overall).
The duo last played together at the 2016 World Junior Championships when they represented Sweden. Since then, the Nylander brothers had not suited up for a game together until Sunday night against the Utah Hockey Club.
