Back when Joe Biden took a jab at the Toronto Maple Leafs in Canadian parliament
During his address to the Canadian Parliament on March 25, 2023, U.S. President Joe Biden joked about not liking the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau was also in attendance when Biden remarked on Maple Leafs.
"Our labor unions cross borders, and so do our sports leagues: baseball, basketball, hockey. Listen to this, hockey. I have to say, I like your teams, except the Leafs," Biden said.
Biden spoke about the game on January 8, 2023, when the Leafs won 6-2 against the Flyers. Everyone inside the Canadian Parliament laughed and gave a standing ovation with a handful of applause.
Biden explained his grudge in January, saying it's because they beat the Philadelphia Flyers.
"I'll tell you why. They beat the Flyers back in January, that's why. And if I didn't say that... I married a Philly girl, if I didn't say that I'd be sleeping alone, fellas. I like you, but not that much. Thank you," Biden said.
Biden's remarks didn't land well with Toronto fans, who have strong emotions toward their team.
President Joe Biden announced he will not run for reelection
On Sunday, President Joe Biden announced, via a statement, that he will not be running for reelection. This decision will impact the upcoming U.S. presidential election race.
"I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down," Biden shared through a tweet on X, formerly Twitter.
Biden shared this update while explaining his presidency's impact on the economy, healthcare, veterans' care, gun safety and climate action.
Biden discussed the progress made under his leadership and thanked the American people and Vice President Kamala Harris. He said he will focus on his duties for the rest of his term.
"My Fellow Americans, Over the past three and a half years, we have made great progress as a Nation. Today, America has the strongest economy in the world," His statement reads.
Biden's decision comes four months before the November 5 elections. Concerns regarding Biden's age and ability to serve another term were increasing. At 81, Biden faced criticism from his party.
Biden had earlier claimed he was the best opponent for Republican nominee Donald Trump. But now, the Democratic Party must choose a new candidate to face Trump.
