Christopher Tanev is an ice hockey defenseman for the Toronto Maple Leafs as of 2025. He attended the Rochester Institute of Technology, where he studied finance while playing college hockey. Tanev's junior and college career began in the Ontario Provincial Junior Hockey League with the Durham Fury in 2006-07.

After spending time with other teams in the league, Tanev played with the Markham Royals in the 2008–09 season, leading all defensemen with 41 points. He then moved on to NCAA Division I with the Rochester Institute of Technology Tigers in 2009–10, where he earned Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Year honors and was named to the All-Rookie and Third All-Star Teams. Tanev won the Atlantic Hockey Conference championship with RIT and was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Chris Tanev signed with the Vancouver Canucks as an undrafted free agent on May 31, 2010. He spent his rookie season with the Canucks' AHL affiliate, the Manitoba Moose, before being called up to the NHL in January 2011. Tanev appeared in the Stanley Cup Final in 2011. Tanev remained with the Canucks for 10 seasons and even scored a memorable overtime goal in the 2020 playoffs against the Minnesota Wild. In 2015, he signed a five-year contract extension.

Calgary Flames

In October 2020, Chris Tanev left the Vancouver Canucks after 10 seasons and signed a four-year, $18 million contract with the Calgary Flames.

Dallas Stars

On February 28, 2024, Chris Tanev was traded from the Calgary Flames to the Dallas Stars in a three-team deal involving the New Jersey Devils. The trade also involved some salary retention by the Devils and additional draft picks, as per Spotrac.

Toronto Maple Leafs

On July 1, 2024, Tanev signed a six-year, $27 million contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs, following his trade to the team from the Dallas Stars, as per Spotrac.
