Connor Bedard vs Connor McDavid: Which NHL star had the better career stats after 100 games?
Connor McDavid and Connor Bedard will forever be compared to one another. On Tuesday night, Chicago Blackhawks second-year star Bedard played in his 100th NHL game.
The first-overall pick in the 2023 NHL entry draft was one of the most hyped-up prospects we've ever seen. Compared with the likes of McDavid, and Sidney Crosby, expectations have been sky-high. Now that Bedard is 100 games into his NHL career, it's interesting to compare his career stats with Connor McDavid's through their first 100 NHL games.
Despite missing 14 games in his rookie season due to a broken jaw, Bedard still managed 61 points in 68 games (22 goals, 39 assists). Through 32 games in his second NHL season, he has recorded 26 points (seven goals, 19 assists), which brings him to 87 points (29 goals, 58 assists) in his first 100 games.
While there have been some ups and downs in his plays to start his NHL career, Connor Bedard is in elite company, thanks to his production. Here's where he stands among other recent first-overall picks in terms of point production through 100 games.
Connor McDavid produced better stats in his first 100 career NHL games
Connor Bedard's 87 points in his first 100 NHL games are impressive, but they don't really compare with Connor McDavid's.
The first-overall pick of the Edmonton Oilers in 2015 suffered an injury of his own during his rookie campaign, missing 37 games with a fractured collarbone. In the shortened 45-game rookie season, McDavid recorded 48 points (16 goals, 32 assists).
The next season, he produced 60 points in his first 55 games, amassing 108 points (34 goals, 74 assists) in his first 100 NHL games, 21 more points than Bedard. Only Sidney Crosby (132 points) and Alex Ovechkin (128 points) had better numbers to begin their careers.
McDavid's production has skyrocketed as his career has progressed. The Oilers captain has won the Art Ross trophy, which is awarded to the league leader in points during the regular season, in five of the last eight NHL seasons. Always known as a playmaker, a motivated Connor McDavid wanted to become more of a goalscorer and scored 64 goals during the 2022-23 season.
He also hit the 1,000-point milestone in 659 games, making history as the fourth-fastest NHL player to reach there.
These are staggering numbers from the 27-year-old, and one can only imagine how many more points he's going to register.
Bedard and Blackhawk fans will hope to see that same jump in production from their Connor in the years to come. It surely will be fascinating continuing to compare the two Connors for the rest of their careers.
