Dylan Larkin

Dylan Larkin is the captain of the Detroit Red Wings. He began his career in Waterford, Michigan, playing for Detroit Belle Tire before joining the USA Hockey National Team Development Program in 2012. The Red Wings selected him 15th overall in the 2014 NHL Draft, and made his NHL debut in the 2015-16 season, scoring 23 goals and 22 assists in his rookie year.

Larkin has continued to be a top performer for the Red Wings, with notable seasons including 32 goals and 41 assists in 2018-19. He has earned three NHL All-Star selections and was second in scoring for the Red Wings in the 2022-23 season with 35 goals and 47 assists.

Why does Dylan Larkin wear 71?

According to MLive, Dylan Larkin wears jersey number 71 because it was one of the few available options when he joined the Detroit Red Wings. He previously wore No. 19 at Michigan, but that number was retired for Red Wings legend Steve Yzerman.

Initially, Larkin hoped to wear No. 25, but that was taken by Mike Green. After considering No. 17, Larkin chose 71, as there were limited numbers left. Larkin has since said there is no particular significance to 71, but he liked having a "9" in the number and just wanted to try something different.

Which Jersey did Dylan Larkin wear previously?

According to MLive, Dylan Larkin previously wore jersey number 19 while playing at Michigan. However, upon joining the Detroit Red Wings, he was unable to wear No. 19, as it was already retired in honor of Steve Yzerman.

According to mgoblue.com, during his college career, Dylan Larkin had several notable performances. His most points in a game came on January 16, 2015, with five points (two goals, three assists) against Ohio State. He had two multi-point games, with the last one occurring on October 25, 2014, against Boston University. His longest point streak was three games, from October 24 to October 31, 2014, where he registered two goals and five assists. Larkin's first collegiate goal came on October 24, 2014, against UMass-Lowell.
