Four key RFAs who remain unsigned with NHL training camp underway ft. Jeremy Swayman

Training camp has begun for Jeremy Swayman and the rest of the NHL, and it won't be long before the puck drops on exhibition play, followed by the 2024-25 regular season. For the first time in history, the Florida Panthers are the defending Stanley Cup champions, while there are other contending clubs looking to dethrone them.

In the meantime, there remain a handful of free agents who have yet to sign on the dotted line of a contract for this season and beyond, with the most notable standout being the main man between the pipes for the Boston Bruins, Jeremy Swayman. Who are the top restricted free agents that remain unsigned?

Boston Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman

Now that camp has begun, it's officially time for Boston Bruins fans to get nervous considering the contract status of starting goaltender Jeremy Swayman.

There has been a standoff between Swayman and the Bruins management led by GM Don Sweeney with reports that the two sides are considerably far apart in negotiations.

The Bruins traded goaltender Linus Ullmark this offseason to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for Joonas Korpisalo, who struggled mightily in 2023-24. Until Swayman agrees to a new deal, Korpisalo is the de facto starter in net for Boston, a prospect that will have the rest of the Atlantic Division licking their chops.

Winnipeg Jets forward Cole Perfetti

Selected with the 10th overall pick in the 2020 NHL Draft by the Jets, Perfetti registered career highs in 2023-24 in games (71), goals (19), and assists (19). However, not everything went smoothly, as he was designated a healthy scratch on a handful of occasions.

According to Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff, it's disappointing that they haven't been able to work out a deal as of yet.

“You’re always looking to hit the ground running in all aspects of things. certainly with (Scott Arniel)’s first training camp and important teaching things that happen early in camp,” Cheveldayoff said.
“We play exhibition games coming up quicker than normal on Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Things happen fast, day by day, so you hope it gets done.”

New Jersey Devils forward Dawson Mercer

The Devils, who are expected to be a force in the Metropolitan Division after a down season in 2023-24, have yet to agree to a contract with Dawson Mercer after the completion of his entry-level contract.

He's reached the 20-goal mark each of the last two seasons, with his personal best output of 27 goals taking place in 2022-23. While his production dipped to 33 points in 2023-24, he remains a key part of New Jersey's attack while routinely playing in the top six.

St. Louis Blues forward Nikita Alexandrov

Currently invited to camp on a tryout basis, Alexandrov has yet to agree to a new contract with the Blues.

In his first taste of NHL action in 2022-23, he tallied three goals and four assists in 28 games but failed to light the lamp in 23 games this past season.
