In the 1927-1928 season, they played against the Montreal Canadiens in their first Stanley Cup Finals appearance. Notably, it was only their second year in operation. In the 1932-1933 season, the Rangers won the series 3-1, claiming their second Stanley Cup against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Next, In 1939-1940, they faced the Toronto Maple Leafs and won the series 4–2, claiming their third Stanley Cup. Notable players during these triumphs include Bill Cook, Lester Patrick, Frank Boucher and Bryan Hextall.
However, the team struggled to appear in the playoffs between the 1940s and 1960s, which would later be notoriously known as the curse years. After the 1970s, the Rangers managed to make it to the Stanley Cup Final twice but failed against the Boston Bruins in 1972 and the Montreal Canadiens in 1979. In the early 1990s, they made a strategic decision to rejuvenate the team which ultimately worked out in 1993-1994.
