Los Angeles Kings History
NHL Expansion and Birth of the Los Angeles Kings (1967-1975)
The Los Angeles Kings were founded as an expansion team in 1967 amid the rumblings that the Western Hockey League was proposing to turn itself into a major league competition. Canadian entrepreneur Jack Kent Cooke paid the NHL $2 million to place one of the six expansion teams in Los Angeles.
The name of the team was decided through a fan contest. The name “Kings” was chosen as Cooke wanted an air of royalty and picked team colors of purple and gold because they were colors traditionally associated with royalty.
The Kings played their first match at the Long Beach Arena during the 1967-68 season, defeating fellow expansion team, the Philadelphia Flyers, 4-2. The first two seasons saw the Kings qualify for the playoffs and display strong performances. The following years were marked by reckless management before a revival saw they become one of the best team’s in the league.
The Marcel Dionee Era (1975-1987)
The Kings acquired Marcel Dionne in 1975 from the Detroit Red Wings. Along with Dionne players like Rogue Vachon and Butch Goring contributed to two of the most thrilling seasons in the King's history.
During his stay with the Kings, Dionee formed the “Triple Crown Line”, centring Charlie Simmer and Dave Taylor. However, the Kings made the postseason from 1976 to 1982 progressing to the second round only thrice.
During the 1986-87 season, Dionne mentored the rookies in the Kings’ organisation as Mickey Redmond had mentioned Dionne during his rookie years. He took Luc Robitaille, Jimmy Carson and Steve Duchesne under his wing. However, he had a fall out with then coach Pat Quinn as the Kings were on track of missing the playoffs that year. Dionne was later traded to the New York Rangers in 1987.
The Wayne Gretzky Era (1988-1995)
A change of ownership in 1987 made the team a Stanley Cup contender in an instant. The team colors were changed to silver and black. Wayne Gretzky was acquired in a trade with the Edmonton Oilers in 1988. Gretzky's arrival was received with mixed response, with the Canadians mourning his loss and much excitement around his joining the Kings organization. In Gretzky's first season with the Kings, he led the team in scoring with 168 points (54 goals, 114 assists) and won the Hart Memorial Trophy, his ninth.
Gretzky led the Kings to their first regular season division title in franchise history in the 1990-91 season, however they lost a closely fought series in the second round. The Kings reached new heights in the 1992-93 season, although Gretzky nearly missed half of the season. The same season, the Kings reached their first Stanley Cup Finals. They faced the Montreal Canadiens in the finals and lost the series 4-1.
Bankruptcy and Rebuild (1995-2009)
Fresh off the 1992-93 season, the 1993-94 season saw them missing the playoffs due to a sluggish start. A notable event took place during the 1994-95 season when Gretzky scored his 802nd goal to pass Gordie Howe as NHL’s all-time leading goal-scorer. Around the same time, owner McNall defaulted on a loan from Bank of America, who threatened to force the Kings into bankruptcy unless McNall sold the team. McNall sold the team to IDB Communications founder Jeffery Sudikoff and former Madison Square Garden president Joseph Cohen. However, reports later emerged that NcNall’s spending put the Kings into trouble, at one point Cohen and Sudikoff were unable to provide player payroll. They were ultimately forced into bankruptcy in 1995. This led to many star players getting traded including Wayne Gretzky.
Current owners, Anschulz and Edward P. Roski purchased the team in 1995 for $113.5 million. The subsequent seasons saw the Kings rebuild. It was during this period that the Kings left The Forum and moved downtown to Staples Center. The following years were marked by moderate success.
Playoffs and Present Times (2009-present)
The Kings returned to the playoffs in the 2009-10 season. They finished 6th overall in the West with 101 points and established a franchise record with nine-game unbeaten streak. The 2011 playoffs saw them enter as the 7th seed and lose to the San Jose Sharks. The following season, the Kings became the only team to enter the playoffs as the eighth seed and eliminate the first and second-seeded teams in the conference. The Kings then defeated the Coyotes in five games to reach the finals, while becoming the first team to defeat the top three conference seeds in the playoffs. The Kings faced the New Jersey Devils in the final and defeated them in six games to clinch their first-ever Stanley Cup. The Kings became the first eighth-seed champion in any of North American major leagues.
On June 1, 2014, the Kings advanced to the Stanley Cup finals for the second time in three years. The Kings became the first team ever to win three game 7s en route to a Stanley Cup Finals berth. The finals featured the Eastern Conference champions, the New York Rangers. The Kings won the Stanley Cup in five games.
The Kings entered the following season as favourites to retain their title, however the Kings were inconsistent in their defence. The following years have been marked by inconsistent runs and playoff struggles. The team is cuy rebuilding itself so that it can repeat its past successes.

When the NHL decided to expand the league for the 1967-68 season, Jack Kent Cooke paid $2 million to place one of the teams in Los Angeles. The first change of ownership happened in 1979, when Jerry Buss, an American businessman and investor acquired the team from previous owner, Jack Kent Cooke. He purchased the Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Kings, The Forum and a 13,000 acre ranch in the Sierra Nevada for $67.5 million ( $270 million in 2022). Buss later sold his interest in the Los Angeles Kings to Bruce McNall in 1988. Following the 1993-94 season, McNall defaulted on a loan from Bank of America which resulted in the team filing for bankruptcy. McNall finally sold the team to IDB Communications. However, the next owners, Joseph Cohen and Jeffery Sudikoff were not able to clear the mess that was left by the previous owner, Bruce McNall. Ultimately, there was another bankruptcy in 1995, which led to many strong players leaving the team. The current owners, Philip Anschulz and Edward Roski acquired the team for $113.5 in 1995.
