Buffalo Sabres confirms 2-year $2.9M contract extension with young center Peyton Krebs

The Buffalo Sabres have signed forward Peyton Krebs to a two-year, $2.9 million contract extension. NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reported on X (formerly Twitter) that the Sabres are close to finalizing a contract extension with the forward. The news and the actual contract value were later confirmed by CBS.

“Hearing Peyton Krebs and Buffalo are closing in on an extension. Sounds like around 2x$1.45M,” Friedman posted on X.

Krebs had a difficult 2023-24 season, failing to reach 20 points for the first time in his career. His entry-level contract expired on July 1, and he needed a new deal before training camp. Even with this contract, Krebs might face limited playing time after Buffalo added Jason Zucker, Sam Lafferty, and Ryan McLeod in the offseason.

In 215 NHL games, Krebs has just 20 goals and 46 assists, totaling 66 points. Under former Sabres head coach Don Granato, Krebs played on a strong defensive line with Kyle Okposo and Zemgus Girgensons. While he became a better two-way player, his offensive game suffered.

With Buffalo’s offseason signings and the growth of young players, Krebs will need to compete for consistent ice time. His new contract gives both him and the team some flexibility as he tries to regain his offensive touch.

Krebs has two years to prove himself and show he can contribute more offensively to the Buffalo Sabres’ lineup.

The Buffalo Sabres are ready to enter the playoffs

The Buffalo Sabres have missed the playoffs for 13 straight years, frustrating their loyal fans. However, there are a few ways they could do to end this drought.

First, the Sabres need to start the season strong. In 2023-24, they had poor performances in the early months, falling behind in points. Teams like Boston, Toronto and Florida performed much better during the same period.

Second, the Sabres need to win more consecutive games. In 2023-24, they struggled to win more than two or three games in a row. Successful teams win multiple games in a row to stay in playoff contention.

Lastly, the Sabres must play consistently for all 60 minutes of each game. Coach Lindy Ruff has emphasized this, as he wants the team to put in a strong effort every night.

If the Buffalo Sabres improve in these areas, they have a better chance of making the playoffs.
