"Didn't know he was a fighter": Maple Leafs vets impressed by Russian rookie Nikita Grebenkin's fistfight skills
Toronto Maple Leafs rookie Nikita Grebenkin left an impression on his veteran teammates when he dropped the gloves with Ottawa Senators forward Adam Gaudette.
After Grebenkin held his own, he instantly became a fan favorite. Not only were Maple Leafs fans impressed by him, but also his vets.
"I didn't know he was a fighter, so that was interesting to see. And he did a great job," William Nylander said to reporters.
"And then fire up the crowd? I just love that. New heavy in town, love to see that," Ryan Reaves said.
"I don't think anyone expected that. ... Young guy trying to earn his spot on the team. Doesn't go unnoticed," Chris Tanev added.
It was heavy praise from the three veterans who will all be on the opening night roster. Although it was only one fight, Grebenkin showed his toughness which could help him earn a roster spot.
Grebenkin was selected in the fifth round of the 2022 NHL draft by the Maple Leafs. This is his first season in North America as he signed his entry-level deal in April after playing in the KHL in Russia last season.
Maple Leafs coach impressed with Nikita Grebenkin
Maple Leafs coach Craig Berube was pleased with Russian rookie Nikita Grebenkin's performance in his preseason debut. He finished the game with five penalty minutes and one shot on goal but was a -1.
"He's a young kid," Berube said, via The Hockey News. "I think he's showing us a lot in camp here, with his strength, size, ability and he's trying to impress."
Grebenkin made a statement on Sunday in Toronto's preseason debut and it will be interesting to see if he'll make the team's roster.
Grebenkin still has several more practices and preseason games left to continue to prove his worth ahead of Toronto's season opener against the Montreal Canadiens on October 9.
The Maple Leafs return to the ice for their second preseason game on Tuesday against the Senators.
