Evander Kane injury: Oilers insider provides shocking new update on $20,500,000 winger's return timeline
Edmonton Oilers left winger Evander Kane underwent surgery this offseason where he had procedures to repair two hernias, two torn hip adductors and two torn abdominal muscles. The injuries were sustained throughout the Oilers' deep playoff run in 2024 where they lost in the Stanley Cup Finals to the Florida Panthers 4-3.
Kane has yet to appear in a game during the 2024-25 season while recovering from his injuries. There has been no timeline for his return, though Bob Stauffer, radio color commentator for the Oilers and host of "Oilers Now", provided an update on Kane's status earlier this week.
"Per Bob Stauffer, it sounds like the earliest we see Evander Kane back with the Oilers is March," said Oilers Daily on X.
Should Kane return in March, he'd miss 28 more games for a total of 59 games missed in 2024-25. If he isn't ready to play by March, it's fair to wonder whether the Oilers will hold him out until the start of the postseason, assuming they make the bracket. Kane has been a major playoff contributor in his time with the Oilers.
While this update still has no official timetable, it tells us Kane's return is still a ways away.
Evander Kane has been a key piece to the success of the Edmonton Oilers
Since signing with the team in 2021, Kane has been very productive for the Oilers. The forward has recorded 111 points (62 goals, 49 assists) in 161 games across three seasons.
Kane has also provided a much-needed physical style of play for Edmonton, dishing out 509 hits in the 161 games he's played as an Oiler. Fans have felt his absence, particularly in games that have gotten chippy.
Here's what one Oilers fan had to say about Kane.
"I especially miss Evander Kane in games like this," the fan wrote.
Fans will surely welcome Kane back once he returns to full health. For now, the Oilers will continue on without him as the team hosts the Boston Bruins at Rogers Place Thursday at 9 p.m. ET.
