"He's one of my best friends": Conor Garland reveals reason for picking Quinn Hughes as newborn son Quint's godfather
Conor Garland has shared why he chose teammate Quinn Hughes to be the godfather of his newborn son, Quint.
In an interview with Sportsnet’s Iain MacIntyre Garland spoke about the strong bond they share and why Hughes was the right choice for his son's godfather.
“Quinn will be his godfather,” Garland told Sportsnet’s Iain MacIntyre. “He’ll be great to him. He’ll be a big part of his life, and (Quint) will be a big part of his.
"He’s one of my best friends. Quinn was great to me at times when I needed somebody, and that’s why I picked him to be his godfather. You need somebody like that in your life.”
Garland and his wife, Meghan, welcomed their son, Quintin, earlier this week. The name drew attention, with some assuming it was inspired by Hughes. Garland clarified it was inspired by Quint, the shark hunter in Jaws.
"It was my favorite character ever, and I thought it was a unique name.”
Growing up in Scituate, Massachusetts, situated midway between Boston and Plymouth, Conor Garland was a huge Jaws fan, and the movie is quite popular there.
“I grew up on the water,” Garland said. “We used to be at the cape (Cape Cod) with my grandparents, and the movie’s a big deal down there.
"Every Friday you could watch it at the drive-in. ... I've always dreamed to be able to watch that movie with my son. It's my favourite movie, a big part of my childhood. So hopefully he feels the same."
Garland played in Tuesday’s game against the Rangers, scoring a goal to tie the game in the second period but they lost 4-3 before heading to hospital that night for Quentin's birth.
