“He’s spectacular” - Donald Trump had high praise for ex-Canucks goalie after watching him play back in 1994
In 1994, as the Vancouver Canucks played the New York Rangers in the Stanley Cup Finals, Donald Trump shared high praise for Canucks goalie Kirk McLean. During an interview, Trump and his second wife, Marla Maples, were questioned about being a hockey fan, to which he agreed. He also praised McLean who was on Rangers nerves.
"We're hockey fans. And you've got some team and you've got some goalie (Kirk McLean), I can tell you." Trump said.
Trump admired McLean’s effort, saying, “He’s spectacular.” Trump further praised McLean while explaining why hockey fans from New York call themselves "Rangers fans."
"Well, I'll tell you what." Trump said, "It's been a long time for the Rangers, and they're here, and they met a hell of a team, and they met somebody who's doing an incredible job in goal, as you know about it. I mean, you've been watching this probably for a long time."
McLean had helped the Canucks reach the Finals by winning the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl as Western Conference champions. In Game 1 of the series, he made 52 saves, including 17 in overtime, leading the Canucks to a 3–2 win. His coach Pat Quinn called McLean’s performance a perfect example for young goalies.
Trump recognized McLean’s skill, saying he was “taking a lot of shots.”
"He's spectacular. I mean, the first game was incredible." Trump said for McLean, "This game, I mean, he is really there, taking a lot of shots, many more shots, but he's keeping them right in the game. So he's great."
McLean finished the playoffs with a strong 15-9 record, a 2.29 goals-against average and a .928 save percentage.
Although the Canucks lost the Finals in Game 7, McLean’s performance in 1994 remains one of his career's best performances.
Donald Trump wins second term as 47th U.S. President
Donald Trump has been elected the 47th president of the United States. He defeated Vice President Kamala Harris by focusing on reducing inflation, tightening immigration policies and ending overseas conflicts. Trump regained support from working-class voters.
At 78, he is the oldest elected president in U.S. history. His campaign emphasized strong leadership and addressed concerns about the country's direction under Democratic policies. With a new Republican Senate majority, Trump may have more support for his legislative goals.
Trump's return follows a controversial first term that saw two impeachments and several legal challenges. His second term promises tax cuts, stricter immigration measures and steps to halt some of his ongoing legal cases.
