"I’m hyped" "Season can start now": NHL fans react as Dawson Mercer signs multi-year contract extension with Devils

New Jersey Devils fans are excited after the team re-signed RFA forward Dawson Mercer on Friday. The Devils signed Mercer to a three-year, $12 million deal.

Mercer was one of the last RFA players left to sign, and he got the deal done as teams opened up training camp.

Following the signing, Devils fans were ecstatic that Mercer's holdout wouldn't go into the start of the season.

"Hockey season can start now LFG," a fan tweeted.
"Great deal, let's roll now," a fan tweeted.

Devils fans were pleased with the deal, especially to get Mercer to sign a three-year contract.

"I am not surprised. Fitz is one of the top GM's in league," a fan tweeted.

"What a beautiful thing to wake up to. LGD," a fan tweeted.

Mercer is expected to be a key player for a Devils roster that is a legit Stanley Cup contender.

"Glad it’s finally done and Dawson can hit the ice. Huge year for him to bounce back," a fan wrote.
"this is music to my ears," a fan tweeted.

Mercer skated in 82 games recording 20 goals and 13 assists for 33 points last season with the Devils. The forward was selected 18th overall in the 2020 NHL draft.

Devils players praise Dawson Mercer

When New Jersey opened training camp, general manager Tom Fitzgerald said a deal with Dawson Mercer was getting close.

At training camp, star forward Jack Hughes said he hoped a deal with Mercer would get done soon.

“We’re all hoping that he gets his deal done and meets us and is ready to go for Prague,” center Jack Hughes said on Thursday, via NHL.com. “We all really love Daws as a guy and as a player. We’re hoping he can get here in the next few days.”

Forward Jesper Bratt echoed the comments of Hughes and said Mercer is a key part of their roster.

“We want him to be here. He’s a huge part of our team. Right now, we have to focus on the guys that are in the room,” Bratt said. “We just hope that situation gets solved so he can come in here and be with us.”

New Jersey will open its 2024-25 NHL season on Oct. 4 in Prague against the Buffalo Sabres.
