Connor McDavid breaks Wayne Gretzky's record
The Edmonton Oilers captain, Connor McDavid, leads the NHL postseason with 38 points. The team was down 3-0 before Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Florida Panthers on Sunday.
However, McDavid and the Oilers stepped up, delivering one of their best performances in the franchise's playoff history. On the brink of a clean sweep, the Oilers beat the Cats with a convincing 8-1 scoreline at Rogers Place, forcing a Game 5.
McDavid had an outstanding game for the Oilers, netting a goal and providing three assists. The assists took him past Wayne Gretzky's longstanding record of 31 in playoff history.
In the post-game media interactions, McDavid acknowledged Wayne Gretzky's significance in the game but emphasized that his current focus is not on breaking records but rather on the team's current performance and goals in the playoffs.
"It’s not lost on me what he means to the game,” McDavid said of Gretzky (via NHL.com). “But it’s not the focus right now"
The Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch expressed his admiration for McDavid's performance in the elimination game of the Final:
"Just because of what was at stake, an elimination game in the Final, he just continues to impress everyone,” said Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch, who coached McDavid with the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League.
“Quite the night for him to set the record. We’re obviously very happy for him to be a part of that"
Knoblauch and the team were thrilled about McDavid's achievement, emphasizing his consistent ability to make crucial plays, score goals and provide assists when it matters the most in the playoffs.
“He just keeps on making plays, scoring goals, getting assists. A great performance. And at the right time.”
Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final between the Oilers and the Panthers returns to Amerant Bank Arena on Tuesday.
