"Is this shade at McLeod?": NHL fans react to Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald's "no d***heads" comment

During his first press conference of the season on Thursday, New Jersey Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald made headlines with a straightforward directive regarding the team's approach to offseason signings and trades.

"No d***heads," the Devils GM commented upon responding to share his thought process when identifying quality people to sign/trade this offseason.

Fitzgerald's blunt statement emphasized a clear preference for quality individuals, aiming to build a positive culture within the organization. The statement from the Devils GM caught many fans and media members off guard on social media.

One X (formerly Twitter) user reacted:

"Is this shade at mcleod?"

Another chimed in:

"Trade Dawson Mercer as soon as reasonably possible. That should have been last October but whatever. Do it ASAP. If that tiny, non-aggressive, allergic-to-contact man is playing 15+ minutes in the playoffs, you will not win the series."
"Is he throwing shade at toffoli, Colin miller, Brendan smith and Chris tierney? another wondered.

While Fitzgerald's comments caught many off guard, a significant number of fans expressed their support for the Devils GM, as one commented:

"Always trusted this man, always liked his vision, this guy is a fu****g quote machine."
"At least he’s looking at quality of a player not if they have skills," one X user opined.
"He doesn’t want any thugs like rempe," another user chimed in.

Tom Fitzgerald optimistic about Dawson Mercer's contract extension

Tom Fitzgerald expressed optimism regarding the ongoing situation regarding forward Dawson Mercer. The 22-year-old is currently not part of the Devils training camp due to his status as a restricted free agent.

The Devils GM indicated that the discussions with Mercer's agent have been productive and that the two sides are nearing an agreement. Tom Fitzgerald acknowledged that until the contract is finalized, Mercer will miss part of the training camp, but he remains hopeful for a resolution soon.

“I think we’re very close,” Fitzgerald said on Thursday (via NJ.com). “We’ve had very healthy conversations, his agent and I. Until it’s finished, he’ll be missing part of camp, so I hope we get that soon.”

Mercer was drafted 18th overall by the New Jersey Devils in the 2020 NHL draft. He has been with the club for the last three seasons, tallying 131 points through 64 goals and 67 assists in 246 games.
