Islanders GM Lou Lamoriello addresses not signing Matt Martin & Cal Clutterbuck to extensions yet - "They know the situation we have"
New York Islanders forwards Matt Martin and Cal Clutterbuck’s future with the team remains uncertain. Martin and Clutterbuck rank seventh and 12th, respectively, in games played for the franchise and are currently unsigned free agents.
In an interview with The Athletic on Monday, Islanders general manager Lou Lamoriello addressed the situation.
“The door never closes on any player that’s been in the organization for the number of years they’ve been,” said Lamoriello. “They know the situation we have; we’ve communicated with them. As far as plans going forward, it’s no different than at the end of [last] year for us.”
Martin, 35, has played 12 out of his 14 NHL seasons for the Islanders, participating in 955 games throughout his career.
Clutterbuck has been part of the Islanders since he was traded from the Minnesota Wild in return for Nino Niederreiter on June 30, 2013. He marked his milestone of playing in his 1,000th NHL game on November last year against the Philadelphia Flyers.
Lamoriello acknowledged the value of Martin and Clutterbuck's experience, saying:
"You're talking about two quality people — we're not saying they won't be here — but I have total confidence in this group that people will come forward when given the opportunity to do so. This is the way that sports go: You never replace certain types of people, but you always have to move on at some point."
Islanders GM Lou Lamoriello talks about the addition of new forwards
The New York Islanders made a couple of key additions up front this offseason, signing winger Anthony Duclair and forward Maxim Tsyplakov.
"Our core is pretty much here. We’ve added a forward (Duclair) that (coach) Patrick is very familiar with from his junior days, and he also brings a dimension to our lineup and gives us a skill factor that can really help our offense," Lamoriello said to The Athletic on Monday.
"Then, the addition of (Tsyplakov), who was highly recruited, had several options, and we’re fortunate he chose us. He’s a bit of an unknown right now. It’s going to be an interesting training camp," the Islanders general manager added.
Duclair is a veteran with over 550 NHL games played. Tsyplakov joins the Islanders from the KHL.
